Cowboy Golf Claims Seventh Consecutive Title At The Maxwell
May 11, 2008 | Cowboy Golf
For the seventh consecutive year, Oklahoma State's men's golf squad came away with the team title at The Maxwell at Dornick Hills Country Club on Sunday.
The Cowboys entered the final round three shots behind Michigan for the tournament lead, but fired a 269 to overtake the Wolverines and come in three shots clear of the field. OSU finished with a 54-hole total of 809, 31-under, for its second consecutive victory and its third of the season.
“We got off to a little bit of a rough start, but we made two birdies on No. 9 and played 10, 11 and 12 all in 1-under and No. 14 in 3-under,” OSU head coach Mike McGraw said. “We started to get on a roll on the back nine and played very well.”
“The hole locations were really good and they were hard. That makes it challenging when you have some young players trying to fire at those flags,” McGraw added. “They pulled it together and they played well, so I am proud of them.”
For the second consecutive outing, freshman Kevin Tway posted a runner-up finish. Coming off a second-place showing at the Big 12 Championship, the Edmond, Okla., native began the day three shots off the pace of Michigan's Bill Rankin for the individual lead. Tway carded an even-par 70 to finish at 206, 4-under, and four shots behind Rankin, who turned in a 69 on Sunday to claim medalist honors.
Sophomore Trent Whitekiller fired a 2-under 68 for the squad's low round of the day to finish in a three-way tie for ninth, giving him the first top 10 of his collegiate career.
A pair of Cowboys, junior Trent Leon and freshman Rickie Fowler, finished in the group tied for 13th place at 4-over 214. Leon posted a 70, while Fowler posted his second consecutive 73 to close out the event.
Freshman Mark Johnson carded his second-straight 72 and finished tied for 26th place at 217.
Junior Jon McLean competed as an individual at the tournament, turning in a 76 during his final round to finish at 218 and tied for 27th place.
The Cowboys will be back in action this week when they travel to Columbus, Ohio for the NCAA Central Regional, which is set to take place May 15-17 at Ohio State's Scarlet Course.
