Cowgirls Have Another Big Day

The Cowgirl track and field team had a busy day Friday, competing in the Texas Relays in Austin, the Missouri Southern Track and Field Festival in Joplin, Mo., and the Sam Howell Invitational in Princeton, N.J.
Two Cowgirls hit NCAA Regional qualifying marks at the Texas Relays. Senior Deleanor Kirkpatrick, the only Cowgirl who competed Thursday, had a season-best hammer throw of 55.99 meters and junior Merritt Dietz had another big discus throw, tossing it 51.33 meters to win the event.
The Oklahoma State 4 x 100-meter relay team had its best time of the season, as sophomore Baiba Blumbaha, senior Fey Bashorun, freshman Tekeisha Lewis and senior Lauren McKee ran the event in 47.29 seconds.
Oklahoma State won two events at the Missouri Southern Track and Field Festival. Senior Tihana Sarac won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.79 and the Oklahoma State 4 x 400-meter relay team, consisting of Sarac, freshmen Teran Mixon, Irene Masai and Brandi Andrews, won the event, the first time Oklahoma State has competed in it this year.
In the 800-meter run, Masai, Andrews and Mixon finished second, third and fourth, respectively. Andrews ran a time of 2:16.04, her best of the season.
In the 5,000-meter run at the Sam Howell Invitational, freshman Mihaela Susa and sophomore Tone Hjalmarsen had NCAA Regional qualifying times and set new personal bests. Susa won the event with a time 16.31.30, more than 20 seconds better than the qualifying mark of 16:52.00, and Hjalmarsen finished fifth at 16:49.09. Susa's time places her on the Oklahoma State outdoor 5,000-meters top 10, which includes three NCAA individual champions and eight All-Americans.
The Cowgirls return to action next week as they send competitors to the UCLA Johnson Kersee Invitional in Los Angeles, Calif., the Arizona State Carnival in Phoenix, Ariz., and the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Okla.
