Cowboy Wrestling Hands Out Postseason Honors
April 30, 2008 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER, Okla. Â The Oklahoma State wrestling program handed out its postseason awards on Tuesday, with NCAA champion Coleman Scott taking the top honors as the squad's Outstanding Wrestler.
A four-time All-American during his Cowboy career, Scott won his first NCAA title by pinning Iowa's Joey Slaton in a tidy 49 seconds in the championship bout. Scott compiled a 10-1 record against ranked opponents in 2007-08, winning each of his last 10 against the ranked. The 133-pound champion at the Reno Tournament of Champions, Scott was recognized as the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 4 after picking up a 6-2 win over No. 7 Nick Fanthorpe of Iowa State and an 8-2 triumph over No. 5 Mack Reiter of Minnesota in which Scott nearly recorded a major decision.
The winner of the Tommy Chesbro Award for recording the most falls was sophomore Jared Rosholt, whose seven pins were good for tops on the team. A 2008 All-American after finishing fourth at the NCAA Championships, Rosholt beat previous nemesis David Zabriskie of Iowa State for the Big 12 Championship, then beat him again to earn a spot in the NCAA third-place bout. Rosholt finished the season with a 33-5 overall record and will likely be the top-ranked heavyweight in the nation going into the 2008-09 season.
Senior 141-pounder Nathan Morgan was presented with the Most Takedowns Award, as his 62 takedowns led the team by a wide margin. A three-time All-American who strung together a 33-5 record and finished fourth at the 2008 NCAA Championships, Morgan was honored as Oklahoma State's Male Student-Athlete of the Year for his success both on the mat and in the classroom.
With a strong showing during the postseason, All-American Jack Jensen took home Most Improved honors. Jensen went into the Big 12 Championships unranked and not in the discussion for a wildcard berth into the NCAA Championships, but knocked off No. 13 Vince Jones of Nebraska and No. 5 Raymond Jordan of Missouri at the conference tournament to earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships. Once at the NCAA Championships, Jensen placed seventh after upsetting Jones a second time then knocking off No. 10 Kirk Smith of Boise State in the seventh-place match.
Strength and Conditioning coach Gary Calcagno was honored with the Bob Dillinger Distinguished Service Award for his contribution to Cowboy wrestling. The award is designed to recognize someone who is not a wrestler or wrestling coach who has a strong impact on the OSU wrestling program. Calcagno has served the Cowboy wrestling program for seven years and has been a member of the OSU athletics staff since 2000.
