April 28, 2008 | Cowboy Golf
TRINITY, Texas (OSU Athletics ) ÂOklahoma State's men's golf team defended its Big 12 title on Sunday, wrapping up a 20-shot victory at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.
The Cowboys began the day with a 16-shot lead over the field and pushed the margin to 20 after carding a 291 final round. OSU finished the 72-hole event with an 11-under-par total of 1,141. Texas finished as the event's runner-up at 1,161 and Texas Tech came in four shots back at 1,165 and in third place.
“It's always exciting to win a championship, especially on a great golf course like Whispering Pines” head coach Mike McGraw said. “This place just keeps getting better and better and we are fortunate to be able to play it.”
For the Cowboys, the title was the 51st in the 62-year history of the program and their second consecutive victory in the event. Overall, OSU has won a league-best six Big 12 titles.
Individually, three Cowboys finished in the top 10 led by a 1-2 showing from freshmen Rickie Fowler and Kevin Tway. The win by Fowler also resulted in back-to-back medalists at the event for the Cowboys and was the sixth time an OSU player has won the title.
For Fowler, the top-ranked player in the country, the win was the second of his career and came by four shots over Tway. The Murrieta, Calif., native entered the final round one shot behind his teammate, but surged into the top spot after a final round 68 gave him a 9-under 279 total.
“I have been in contention and hadn't been able to play well enough to catch the leader,” Fowler said. “Today I hit the ball really well, didn't putt as well as I would have liked, but came out and shot 68. I am going to try to take that into postseason and keep on working on hitting it well and getting putts to drop when it really matters.”
“It was a lot of fun having all of the guys playing pretty well out there and it is nice to see all five guys playing well heading into regionals and nationals,” Fowler added.
Tway posted a 1-over 73 during his second round to earn the first runner-up finish of his young Cowboy career. The Edmond, Okla., native finished with a 5-under 283 total at the par-72, 7,470-yard layout.
Mark Johnson rounded out OSU's trio of top-10 freshmen finishers, tying for seventh place. The Tulsa, Okla., native carded a 74 on Sunday to get in at 290.
Sophomore Trent Whitekiller tied for 13th place at 294 after a round of 79, while junior Trent Leon tied for 18th place with a 296 score after carding a 76.
The Cowboys will be back in action on May 10 at The Maxwell in Ardmore, Okla.
