Cowboys Open Series With 6-1 Win Over Kansas
April 26, 2008 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Andrew Oliver turned in another strong performance on the mound as Oklahoma State won its season-high seventh-straight game with a 6-1 triumph over Kansas Friday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the win, the 13-ranked Cowboys improved to 12-7 in Big 12 Conference play and 30-11 overall. OSU is 18-2 on its home field this season.
Oliver earned the win with an eight inning effort to improve to 4-2 on the season. The sophomore southpaw allowed just one run on four hits while striking out six and lowered his ERA to 2.19.
Neil Medchill, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week, had a three-run home run in the seventh inning, and Donnie Webb and Jordy Mercer each had RBI hits in the Cowboys' win.
KU (25-20, 5-11) took the game's first lead in the third as Joe Southers scored from second on a single by Robby Price to put the Jayhawks up 1-0.
The Cowboys answered in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Matt Hague singled, and Rebel Ridling stepped to the plate and sent a fly ball to center field. But KU center fielder Nick Faunce dropped the ball, and Hague scored to tie the score at 1-1.
OSU took the lead in the next inning on an RBI single by Mercer, and the score remained 2-1 until the seventh when Medchill followed back-to-back singles by Hague and Ridling with a three-run homer to right field. The blast was Medchill's fourth of the season.
That was more than enough for Oliver, who retired the Jayhawks in order in four of his eight innings of work.
The game marked the fifth start in a row in which Oliver has allowed two or fewer earned runs.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 2 p.m.
