Cowboy Golfers Hold 36-Hole Lead At Big 12 Championship

Oklahoma State's men's golf team took a commanding lead though 36 holes at the Big 12 Championship on Friday, posting a 567 team total at Whispering Pines Golf Club to build a 15-shot advantage over the field.
The Cowboys were the only team to break par on the day with their 9-under score at the par-72, 7,470-yard layout. OSU opened with a 3-under 285 before firing a 6-under 282 during the afternoon to increase its lead.
Texas finished in second place at 582, while Texas A&M finished one stroke behind the Longhorns and alone in third place.
A trio of freshmen all finished under par for the Cowboys as Kevin Tway and Rickie Fowler are tied atop the individual leaderboard at 4-under 140, while Mark Johnson came in at 1-under 143 and is tied for sixth place.
Tway put together a solid first round that featured 14 pars and two birdies on his way to an even-par 72. During his second round, the Edmond, Okla., native went out in 3-under 33 before posting a 35 on his inward nine to match his career-low round of 68.
Fowler's morning round saw him bogey his first three holes before rallying with five birdies to finish at even-par 72. The Murrieta, Calif., native recorded eight birdies during his second round en route to a 4-under 68 and a share of the lead.
Johnson got off to a fast start during the morning round, making the turn at 1-under and finishing with three birdies on his inward nine for a 69. The 3-under total was the Tulsa, Okla., native's first career round in the 60s. Johnson carded a 74 during Round Two to come in tied for sixth place.
Sophomore Trent Whitekiller posted back-to-back 72s to finish the day tied for eighth place at 144.
Junior Trent Leon posted rounds of 73 and 76 for a 149, tying him for 23rd place.
The Cowboys will return to the course tomorrow morning at 9:50 and will be paired with Texas and Texas A&M.
