OSU At The Big 12 Championship
OSU has won a league-best five Big 12 titles since the formation of the conference in 1996. OSU won the inaugural tournament in 1997 and repeated in 1998 before claiming titles in 2000, 2005 and last season. The Cowboys have also produced the event's individual medalist on five occasions with Leif Westerberg (1997), Charles Howell (2000), Anders Hultman (2002), Hunter Mahan (2003) and Pablo Martin (2007) all taking top honors. Overall, the Cowboys have won 50 league titles and have produced 42 individual champions.
Last Time At Whispering Pines
The Big 12 Championship has been held at Whispering Pines on one other occasion. The conference tourney made its first stop in Trinity, Texas in 2005 and it is a trip OSU will remember fondly. In former head coach Mike Holder's final Big 12 Championship, the Cowboys strolled to a nine-shot victory over the field, finishing with an 868 total. OSU also produced the event's runner-up in Alex Norén and third-place finisher in Zack Robinson. Tyler Leon made it a trio of Cowboys in the top 10 after tying for eighth place. The win also gave OSU its first conference title since 2000.
Big 12 Rewind ... 2007 Big 12 Championship
Behind a 1-2 finish from junior Pablo Martin and senior Ryan Posey, Oklahoma State's men's golf team claimed its league-leading fifth Big 12 title at Prairie Dunes Golf Club. The Cowboys entered the day with a five-shot lead over Texas A&M and carded a 7-over 287 score during their final round to finish with a 26-over-par 866 tournament total and seven shots clear of the Aggies. Martin and Posey fueled the Cowboys as each player carded an impressive 2-under 68 in tough scoring conditions to claim the top two spots on the leaderboard. Joining the duo in the top 10 was senior Tyler Leon, who tied for ninth place. For Martin, the victory was the fifth of his career and marked the 42nd time an OSU player has claimed medalist honors at the conference tournament. The Malaga, Spain native finished with a 1-over 211 total to finish three shots ahead of Posey and become the fifth Cowboy overall and first since Hunter Mahan in 2003 to be crowned Big 12 champion. For Posey, the runner-up finish marked his best as a collegian and was his second consecutive top-10 finish after tying for sixth place at the U.S. Collegiate. Leon began his final 18 alone in fifth place after a pair of 72s on Monday before carding a 77 to finish tied with Colorado's Michael Baird for ninth at 221.Sophomore Trent Leon moved up six spots and posted a top-20 finish of his own, wrapping up play in a three-way tie for 17th place. Fellow sophomore Jonathan Moore rounded out the OSU five in a tie for 30th place at 229.
What 2 Watch 4
The Cowboys last captured consecutive crowns in 1997 and 1998 ... OSU has won 50 conference titles in its 61-year history, marking an astounding 82 percent of the time the Cowboys have emerged as the conference champion ... Rickie Fowler has finished in the top 10 in each of his eight starts this season ... the Cowboys are 11-4 this season against Big 12 foes ... OSU's lone victory this season came with the starting five it will use this weekend ... a win would be OSU's 10th overall and second Big 12 title in three seasons under head coach Mike McGraw.
