BIRMINGHAM, Ala.ÂFollowing his first career collegiate victory, Oklahoma State junior Trent Leon was named the Southern Golf Association's National Amateur of the Month for March.
Leon carded an 8-under-par 208 total to claim a one-stroke victory at the U.S. Collegiate Championship in Alpharetta, Ga. on March 26. The Dallas, Texas native posted back-to-back 69s before closing with a 70 during his final round to claim medalist honors against one of the nation's strongest fields.
Leon followed that performance with a third-place showing in the Azalea Invitational a week later in Charleston, S.C.
The monthly SGA award, now in its sixth year, is selected from among amateur performances throughout the U.S. in all age groups by a national blue-ribbon panel of 15 golf officials, coaches and journalists. The 106-year-old Southern Golf Association promotes amateur golf in a variety of ways, including the staging of the prestigious Southern Amateur Championship, which will be contested in July at the Lake Nona Club in Orlando, Fla.
Leon and the rest of the Cowboy squad will be back in action on April 7 when they travel to Austin, Texas to take part in the Morris Williams Intercollegiate.
