Cowboys Drop 7-3 Contest To Texas-Arlington
April 16, 2008 | Cowboy Baseball
Six different OSU pitchers combined to give up 14 hits as the 14th-ranked Cowboys fell to 23-11 on the season.
UTA (16-20) scored runs in each of the first four innings, while starter Matthew Otteman worked six innings and allowed just one run on five hits while striking out six to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Neil Medchill led the OSU offense with a 2-for-4, two-RBI day, while Jordy Mercer extended his hitting streak to a season-long 13 games with a bunt single in the sixth inning.
UTA took the lead in its first at bat as David McLeod doubled with one out and scored on a single by Danny Slinkman. The Mavericks added to their lead in the second inning with a pair of runs on three hits, getting an RBI single by Steffan Guest and scoring on a fielder's choice to make the score 3-0.
The Cowboys pushed across their first run in the third. Rebel Ridling led off the inning with a single, which was followed by a double off the bat of Donnie Webb. An RBI groundout by Thomas Belza plated Ridling from third and made the score 3-1.
The Mavericks answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of unearned runs, driving OSU starter Matt Gardner from the game after just 2.2 innings with the Cowboys trailing 5-1.
After winning his last three starts, Gardner suffered the loss to fall to 4-2 on the season. The senior right hander allowed five runs, just two of them earned, on eight hits.
OSU trailed 6-1 after six innings, but Luis Flores drew a walk to lead off the seventh, and Medchill followed with a two-run home run to right field to trim the Cowboys' deficit in half. The homer was Medchill's second of the season.
OSU returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Mid-America Christian in a 6:30 p.m. contest at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
