Orange Tops White In Oklahoma State Spring Game, 9-7

STILLWATER, Okla. - Seb Clements' safety with four minutes left in the fourth quarter ended up being the difference in the Orange team's 9-7 win over the White team at the Oklahoma State Orange and White spring game played in front of an estimated 20,000 fans in Boone Pickens Stadium Saturday.
With an infusion of new players, the OSU defense controlled the scrimmage for both teams. In fact, the opening kickoff provided a sign of what was to come, as White team linebacker Andre Sexton jarred the ball loose from Orange return man Dez Bryant and his fumble was recovered by the White team's Justin Gent.
From there, Alex Cate guided the White on a six-play, 42-yard touchdown drive that was capped by a 16-yard Cate-to-Beau Johnson touchdown pass for what ended up being the only score of the day for the White team.
Points were also hard to come by for the Orange team, which did not get on the board until a 31-yard Zac Robinson-to-Wilson Youman touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Clements' safety later in the quarter ended the scoring.
"I was really excited to watch the defense including some of the young guys get pressure on the quarterbacks," Coach Mike Gundy said. "It's nice to see that because we haven't had that kind of pressure in a couple of years at OSU."
Playing for the White team, Gent led all players with 10 tackles, nine of which were solo. He also added a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. Defensive end Jamie Blatnick was a force along the defensive line for the Orange team, recording three sacks totaling 27 yards. Fellow Orange teamer James Thomas snuffed out a White team drive late in the first quarter with an interception.
Running backs Kendall Hunter (Orange) and Beau Johnson (White) both did their share of damage, with Hunter rushing 11 times for 69 yards (6.3 avg) and Johnson adding 11 carries for 69 yards (6.3 average). Walk-on running back Melvin Davis was also effective carrying the ball, as he ran 10 times for 69 yards (6.9 avg).
Playing for the Orange team, Bryant led all receivers with eight catches for 87 yards in the game.
"The kids are buying into the system. They've had over a year and couple months in the system now, so we need to have marked improvement," Defensive coordinator Tim Beckman said. "We understand where we need to get and we've got a long way to get to that thing we're talking about, but we're making our strides and taking it day by day and we're trying to get better day by day."
