April 11, 2008 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. Â The Oklahoma State Cowgirls inked seven players to national letters of intent Wednesday, it was announced by OSU head coach Colin Carmichael.
Carmichael received signatures from five of Oklahoma's top high school players, while also securing a pair of prep stars from Texas.
“We're very excited about the 2008 recruiting class,” Carmichael said. “There are some very good players coming in who can make an immediate impact on the program.
“It may be the strongest group we've brought in to date at Oklahoma State.”
The following is a breakdown of OSU's signees:
Sarah Brown, MF, Tulsa, Okla. (Jenks HS)
Brown was a member of Oklahoma's Olympic Development Program from 2005-07. She played for the Hurricane Futbol Club '89 and was the team captain for Tulsa Soccer Club '90.
Brown, who also considered Tulsa and Vanderbilt, led Jenks to a Class 6A state championship in 2006 and a state runner-up finish in 2005.
Carmichael on Brown: “Sara is a very hardworking midfielder who is tenacious, full of energy and has a chance to compete for minutes right off the bat. She defends very hard and covers a lot of ground.”
Elizabeth DeLozier, D/MF, Houston, Texas (St. Agnes Academy)
A four-year member of the Region 3 ODP team, DeLozier also attended the ODP National Camp. She was a team captain for the Eclipse '90 squad from 2001-07 and currently plays for Challenge '90.
At the high school level, DeLozier set a school record at St. Agnes Academy with 21 goals and 12 assists during her senior season.
DeLozier's great grandfather, Dr. Henry G. Bennett, was the president of Oklahoma A&M from 1928-51, and her father, Phil DeLozier, along with two of her uncles, lettered on national championship golf teams at OSU. She also considered Rice, Texas, Tennessee and Texas Tech.
Carmichael on DeLozier: “She's a very composed player whose vision and technique is very good. Those tools should help her make an impact at Oklahoma State.”
Colleen Dougherty, D, Oklahoma City, Okla. (Bishop McGuinness HS)
Dougherty spent 2004 playing with the Region 3 ODP team and attended the ODP National Camp. She was also a member of the Edmond Soccer Club '90, which was twice a national runner-up and a two-time regional champion.
Dougherty, who was also recruited by TCU, Oklahoma and Tulsa, led Bishop McGuinness to the state championship game in 2006 and a state semifinal appearance in 2005.
Carmichael on Dougherty: “Colleen is left footed, which gives her a big advantage because we don't have a true left-footed player on her team. She serves a great long ball and is a very good athlete.”
Alison Farrell, MF/D, Edmond, Okla. (Edmond North HS)
A member of the Oklahoma ODP team from 2004-06, Farrell also played for the Edmond Soccer Club '90, which was twice a national runner-up and a two-time regional champion.
Farrell led Edmond North to a pair of Class 6A state final appearances. She was twice named The Oklahoman Defensive Player of the Year and was the All-Edmond Player of the Year in 2007. She also considered TCU and Oklahoma.
Carmichael on Farrell: “Alison is a big, strong, physical presence on the field and is also a very good player with the ball. She distributes the ball very well.”
Krista Lopez, MF/F, Carrollton, Texas (Creekview HS)
Lopez played for the Region 3 ODP team from 2004-06 and was in the U.S.Y.S.A. ODP U-15 National Pool in 2004 and 2005. She has played club soccer for the D'Feeters '90 since 2005.
At Creekview High School, Lopez led her squad to the state finals in 2005 and 2006, and she was voted the District 10-5A Newcomer of the Year for 2004-05. Lopez also considered Villanova.
Carmichael on Lopez: “Krista is a very skilled player who is very good one-on-one and can beat people, can score goals and can create chances. She's a very tricky and elusive player with the ball and also defends very hard.”
Melinda Mercado, D, Sapulpa, Okla. (Sapulpa HS)
Mercado played on the Oklahoma ODP team from 2004-06 and was part of the Edmond Soccer Club '90 that was twice a national runner-up and a two-time regional champion.
A two-sport star at Sapulpa High School, Mercado is also a member of the Lady Chieftains state championship basketball team. She signed with the Cowgirls after also considering TCU and Texas Tech.
Carmichael on Mercado: “Melinda's size and athleticism enable her to shut down very good forwards, and her physical attributes will allow her to compete in the Big 12 very well.”
Kyndall Treadwell, F, Cleveland, Okla. (Cleveland HS)
Another member of the Region 3 ODP team (2004-06), Treadwell also played for the Edmond Soccer Club '90, which was twice a national runner-up and a two-time regional champion.
Treadwell was the team MVP at Cleveland High School, where she broke the school record for goals in a season with 27. She was also recruited by Texas, TCU, Texas A&M and Tennessee.
Carmichael on Treadwell: “Kyndall is a very quick forward and very good goal scorer with great composure in front of the goal. Hopefully, she'll come in and score a lot of goals for us, and she can also create chances off the dribble because she's very technically gifted.”
