Ninth Inning Rally Lifts Cowboys To Win
March 08, 2008 | Cowboy Baseball
SAN DIEGO Â Luis Flores drove in a pair of runs, including the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning, to lead Oklahoma State to a 3-2 win over Loyola Marymount in the Aztec Invitational Thursday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The 20th-ranked Cowboys escaped a comeback bid by the Lions in the bottom of the ninth to improve to 8-1, while LMU dropped to 3-7.
With one out in the top of the ninth and the score tied 1-1, OSU's Donnie Webb, the Big 12 Conference's leading hitter, tripled into the right field corner. That set the stage for Flores, who stepped to the plate and delivered a single through the left side to put the Cowboys on top.
Three batters later, Dylan Brown, who was 2-for-4 in the contest, collected an RBI on a single to center field to give the Cowboys a 3-1 advantage.
Brown's RBI proved critical as LMU rallied in the bottom of the ninth.
OSU reliever Robbie Weinhardt struck out Angelo Songco to lead off the inning, but an error and two walks loaded the bases with two outs. Weinhardt then surrendered his third walk of the inning, this one to A.J. LaMonda, to bring home a run and make the score 3-2.
With the tying run on third and the bases full, the Cowboys called on closer Jordy Mercer to get them out of the jam. And after falling behind in the count 3-0 to Sean Dovel, Mercer delivered, striking out Dovel swinging to seal the OSU win.
Weinhardt, who relieved starter Andrew Oliver in the eighth, earned his first win of the season for the Cowboys, while Mercer picked up his second save.
The game went into the fourth inning with neither team having scored a run, but Flores changed that with one swing of the bat by blasting a solo home run over the left field wall. It was Flores' first round tripper of the season and gave the Cowboys a 1-0 lead.
OSU held onto the lead until the sixth. After Oliver struck out the first two hitters of the inning, Dovel doubled down the left field line. Following a walk, Ollie Enos singled to right field, and Dovel slid home just ahead of the throw from Brown to tie the score at 1-1.
Oliver tossed a career-high seven innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out six. The sophomore southpaw did not allow a hit through the first 3.2 innings.
OSU returns to action Friday when they battle No. 17 San Diego at 4 p.m. (CST).
