Dietz Sets School Record In Discus Throw

ARLINGTON, Texas. – The Oklahoma State women's track and field team had an outstanding performance Saturday at the UTA Bobby Lane Track and Field Invitational, highlighted by a school record set by junior Merritt Dietz in the discus throw.
In addition to Dietz's record throw of 52.18 meters, three Cowgirls won events. Sophomore Baiba Blumbaha won the triple jump with a jump of 12.30 meters, senior Deleanor Kirkpatrick won the hammer throw with a toss of 55.98 meters and senior LaKendra Greathouse won the shot put with a throw of 14.88 meters.
Five Cowgirls hit NCAA regional qualifying marks, including Dietz in the discus throw, Blumbaha in the triple jump, Kirkpatrick in the hammer throw and Greathouse in the shot put. Joining them was senior Alina Roman in the discus throw, hurling it 47.83 meters.
Freshman Teran Mixon, from Coalgate, Okla., qualified for the USA Junior Track and Field Championships in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:39.31.
Coach Rene Sepulveda said he was pleased with his team's performance.
“(OSU throws coach John Baumann) wanted a perfect day as far as weather goes, to get regional marks for all the throwers.” Sepulveda said. “Everyone he expected to qualify has qualified and we're on our way to a good season.”
Sepulveda also praised Dietz on her record-setting performance.
“Alina Roman came in here last year and set the school record and Merritt beat that today.” Sepulveda said. “The two of them are having a good, friendly competition and are pushing each other nicely. It's a healthy competition between two throwers that are both doing very well.”
The Cowgirls return to action next week, when the team will split and compete in both the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas and the Sam Howell Invitational in Princeton, N.J.
