March 29, 2008 | Cowboy Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. Â Oklahoma State rallied for six runs in the eighth inning en route to a 9-4 win over Kansas State Saturday at Tointon Stadium.
Toby Davis, Michael Dabbs and Jordy Mercer each had two-RBI hits in the pivotal inning to help the 22nd-ranked Cowboys return to the .500 mark in Big 12 Conference play at 4-4. OSU is now 18-7 overall.
OSU's win also snapped K-State's five-game winning streak as the Wildcats fell to 12-12 overall and 1-4 in Big 12 play.
The Cowboys trailed 4-2 after seven innings of play, but loaded the bases with one out in the eighth as KSU's Trevor Hurley walked three-straight batters.
After Hurley loaded the bases, K-State closer Daniel Edwards came out of the bullpen to try and stop the rally, but on the first pitch he threw,
Edwards struck out Luis Flores for the second out of the inning, but Dabbs would step to the plate next and provide a clutch hit. The junior worked the count full and fouled off several pitches before, on the ninth pitch of the at bat, he doubled to left-centerfield to bring home two runs and give OSU the lead.
The Cowboys were not done as Mercer followed Dabbs with a home run to left field to extend the lead to 8-4. The homer was Mercer's fifth of the season.
Mercer also contributed on the mound as he came on with two on and two out in the bottom of the eighth and pitched the Cowboys out of the jam. He also kept K-State off the scoreboard in the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.
With the save, Mercer raised his career total to 13, and he needs just two more to set OSU's all-time mark.
Tyler Lyons improved to 4-2 on the mound this season with a 7.2-inning effort for the Cowboys. The sophomore southpaw allowed four runs, all of them in the fifth inning, and struck out eight. His four wins leads the team.
Dabbs led the OSU offense with a 3-for-5, two-RBI day, while Mercer was 2-for-5 and drove in two runs.
The two teams will play the decisive series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
