Cowboys Lose Series Opener Against Texas A&M
March 22, 2008 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State dropped its third-straight Big 12 Conference contest Friday night, losing 9-5 to Texas A&M at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the loss, the 26th-ranked Cowboys fell to 1-3 in the conference and 13-6 overall, while No. 17 Texas A&M improved to 3-1 in the league and 17-4 on the season.
The Aggies roughed up OSU starter Andrew Oliver in their first at bat, rallying for five runs on five hits. Darby Brown drove in the first two runs with a single, and a three-run home run by Nick Fleece gave TAMU a 5-0 lead.
Oliver entered the game having allowed just four earned runs in four starts this season, but the sophomore left hander gave up eight runs  seven of them earned  on eight hits in 5.1 innings. He also walked five and fell to 2-1 on the season.
OSU got on the scoreboard in the first inning after back-to-back singles by Luis Flores and Jordy Mercer and a sacrifice fly by Matt Hague.
The score remained 5-1 until the fourth when the Cowboys trimmed their deficit to two on Donnie Webb's two-RBI single.
OSU trailed 8-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, when they would mount a rally. Thomas Belza led off the frame with a single, and a single by Dylan Brown and a TAMU error put Cowboys on first and third with no outs.
After the next two Cowboy hitters struck out, Mercer was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hague then stepped up and collected his second RBI of the game on a walk to make the score 8-4. But Hague was retired on a ground ball off the bat of Rebel Ridling to end the OSU threat.
Webb led the OSU offense with a 2-for-4, three-RBI effort. Belza was also 2-for-4, while Hague drove in a pair of runs.
Brooks Raley earned the win for the Aggies, working 6.2 innings and allowing four runs on eight hits to improve to 3-0.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 2 p.m.
