Cowboys Rout Northwestern, Improve To 6-0

TAMPA, Fla. Â Oklahoma State is off to its best start in more than a decade after a 13-3 win over Northwestern Friday at Red McEwen Field.
With the win, the 21st-ranked Cowboys improved to 6-0, marking their best start to a season since 1995 when they won 11-straight games to open the year.
Rebel Ridling and Donnie Webb each collected three hits for the Cowboys, while Tyler Lyons improved to 2-0 with a career night on the mound.
OSU did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard. In the top of the first inning, Jordy Mercer doubled, and two batters later, Ridling blasted his first home run of the season, an opposite field shot to right field that gave the Cowboys a 2-0 lead.
The Cowboys increased their lead in the second frame with a five-run rally. After a single by Luis Flores, Dylan Brown delivered a double down the left field line, and Rafael Thomas walked to load the bases with one out. Toby Davis then collected an RBI with a walk, and Mercer followed with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-0.
Coach Frank Anderson's squad was not done, and it was third baseman Matt Hague providing the big blow in the inning with a three-run home run over the right-centerfield wall to increase OSU's lead to 7-0.
Lyons did not allow a run until the third, when Mike Kalina drove in a run with an infield single to trim OSU's lead to seven.
OSU's other big inning came in the fourth when the Cowboys erupted for four more runs. Webb had a two-RBI single in the rally, while Davis and Tyrone Hambly each drove in a run.
Lyons picked up his second win of the season with a career-long six innings of work in which he allowed just one run and also set a personal best with six strikeouts.
Ridling finished 3-for-4 for with a pair of RBIs, while Webb was 3-for-5 and drove in three runs. Hague also had three RBIs for the Cowboys.
OSU returns to action Saturday when they face Northwestern at 2 p.m. (CST). The Cowboys close out the weekend in Tampa with an 11 a.m. (CST) contest Sunday.
