DURHAM, N.C. Â Oklahoma State junior Jordy Mercer has been named a preseason All-American by Baseball America, it was announced today.
A shortstop and pitcher, Mercer was named to the publication's third-team All-America squad as a utility player. Major League Baseball scouting directors vote on Baseball America's All-America team and make their selections based on performance, talent and major league potential.
A two-time All-Big 12 Conference performer and former Freshman All-American, Mercer is coming off a sophomore campaign in which he hit .299 with five home runs and 24 RBIs in 40 games. The Taloga, Okla., product was also 3-1 with three saves and a 3.81 ERA in 11 appearances on the mound a year ago.
Mercer played for USA Baseball last summer and was part of a team that won the silver medal at the Pan American Games in Brazil.
In two seasons in an OSU uniform, Mercer has started 94 games at shortstop and sports a career .282 batting average with 11 homers and 48 RBIs. As the Cowboys' closer, he has made 23 appearances on the mound and is 8-1 with eight saves.
