Eight-Run Rally Propels Cowboys To Win
February 25, 2008 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State used an eight-run sixth inning Saturday to lift the Cowboys to a 12-2 win over Gonzaga at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Matt Hague and Jordy Mercer each drove in three runs, while Neil Medchill had three hits and a pair of RBIs as OSU improved to 2-0 on the season.
On the mound, Tyler Lyons earned the first win of his OSU career in his first-career start. The sophomore left hander allowed just two runs on four hits in five innings of work.
Sophomore Matt Willis pitched the final four innings and did not allow a run while striking out three to earn his first-career save as a Cowboy.
OSU took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-out, two-RBI single by Mercer, but the Bulldogs tied the score in the top of the fourth when Brett Nicholas delivered a single that plated two runs.
The Cowboys answered in the bottom of the inning. Rebel Ridling walked to lead off the frame, and freshman Dean Green smashed an RBI double to left field to make the score 3-2.
OSU's lead remained one until the huge rally in the sixth.
Hague jump started that rally with a triple off the top of the wall in left-center field. After Ridling and Luis Flores walked to load the bases, Medchill stepped to the plate and drove in a pair of runs with a double. Flores also scored on the play on an error to make the score 6-2.
The Cowboys weren't done. Medchill stole third and scored on a throwing error by GU catcher Anthony Synegal, and Mercer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give OSU an 8-2 advantage.
That brought up Hague, who once again delivered a big hit. This time the senior third baseman doubled down the left field line, collecting three RBIs and making the score 11-2.
OSU's final run came on an RBI hit-by-pitch by Michael Dabbs in the bottom of the seventh.
The two teams will conclude the series Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
