February 25, 2008 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State completed a series sweep of Gonzaga with a doubleheader win Sunday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. The Cowboys won the opener, 3-1, before taking the nightcap by a 10-3 margin.
The series sweep marks the second consecutive season the Cowboys have opened the season 4-0.
In the opener, senior Matt Gardner earned his 10th-straight decision on the mound, a streak that dates back to the 2006 season. The right hander allowed just one run on three hits in five innings of work.
GU (0-4) got on the scoreboard in the first inning of the opener on a sacrifice fly by Brett Nicholas, and the score remained 1-0 until the third.
In the third, Tyrone Hambly led off the Cowboys' inning with a walk and took second on a sacrifice bunt by Rafael Thomas. Michael Dabbs brought home Hambly with a double to tie the score, and two batters later, Matt Hague delivered an RBI single to make the score 2-1.
OSU added its final run in the seventh when Hambly, who was 2-for-2 in the game, homered over the left field wall.
Matt Peck pitched three perfect innings in relief of Gardner, and Jordy Mercer came on in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
In the nightcap, OSU got off to a rough start as starter Thomas Keeling struggled with his control, walking four and hitting a batter in just 2/3 of an inning as the Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead.
Josh Neal came on in relief of Keeling and got the Cowboys out of the inning, but the score remained 3-0 until the fourth.
In that pivotal inning, OSU erupted for its second eight-run rally of the weekend. Rebel Ridling led off with a walk, and Donnie Webb blasted a home run just over the right field wall to make the score 3-2. Hambly was up next and tied the game with his second homer of the day.
The Cowboys were not done. Mercer gave OSU the lead with a two-RBI single with the bases loaded, and a sacrifice fly by Ridling made the score 6-2. Two batters later, Hambly again provided a clutch hit as he drove home two runs with a single.
Jeff Breedlove, who came out of the bullpen in the fourth, earned his first win since 2006 as he hurled three scoreless innings and struck out four.
Hambly was one of four Cowboys who finished with two hits in the game, and he led the Cowboys' attack with four RBIs. Hague, Webb and Ryan Pittman also collected two hits apiece.
Tyler Blandford kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard over the final three innings to earn his first-career save.
OSU returns to action Thursday when the Cowboys take on South Florida in Tampa. Fla.
