No. 3 Cowboys Fall To No. 17 Oklahoma, 18-15
February 22, 2008 | Cowboy Wrestling
OU got off to a good start when sixth-ranked 184-pounder Joshua Weitzel pinned OSU's Jack Jensen in 2:18 in the first match of the evening. No. 9 Joel Flaggert followed with a 9-6 win over Clayton Foster at 197 pounds to give the Sooners a 9-0 lead in the dual that they never surrendered. Jared Rosholt, Coleman Scott, Nathan Morgan, Jake Dieffenbach and Brandon Mason were all winners for the Cowboys by decision, but the pin combined with Joey Fio's upset win over Tyler Shinn at 125 pounds were too much for OSU to overcome.
The Cowboys return to action when they host the 2008 Big 12 Championship at Gallagher-Iba Arena on March 8. Tickets are available through the OSU Ticket Office at 1-877-ALL-4-OSU or online at www.okstate.com

197 pounds: No. 9 Joel Flaggert extended OU's lead in the dual to 9-0 when he picked up a 9-6 win over OSU freshman Clayton Foster. Trailing, 5-2 with just under a minute left in the second period, Foster had Flaggert by one leg, but Flaggert came up lame and asked the referee for time, which was granted before Foster could complete the takedown. Following a short injury break, Flaggert instantly recovered and stormed in for a takedown of his own, which he worked on before eventually getting the two points with one second left in the period. The third period started with Foster trailing, 7-2. He chose down to start the period and immediately scored a reversal to trim the deficit to 7-4. Foster cut Flaggert loose, then took him down a second time in the period with 22 seconds on the clock to bring the score to 8-6. Foster let Flaggert loose again at the 12 second mark, but ran out of time on his rally to take the defeat.
285 pounds: No. 8 Jared Rosholt picked up OSU's first win of the night with an 8-3 decision over Nathan Fernandez. After a scoreless and largely stagnant first period, Rosholt chose the down position to start the second period and escaped five seconds in to take a 1-0 lead. He scored a takedown 18 seconds later to increase his lead to 3-0. A Fernandez escape capped the second period scoring. In the third period, Fernandez escaped quickly to bring the score to 3-2, but Rosholt scored a takedown at the 1:05 mark and added final takedown in the waning seconds to take a 7-3 lead. When Rosholt's 1:20 of riding time was factored in, he claimed an 8-3 win.
125 pounds: No. 17 Joey Fio of
133 pounds: Top-ranked Cowboy Coleman Scott was a 7-2 winner over Brian Shelton. Scott got on the board with a takedown just 13 seconds into the bout. He let
141 pounds: Second-ranked Nathan Morgan of
149 pounds: Ryan Freeman suffered a 7-2 loss at the hands of No. 17 Will Rowe. After a scoreless first period that was spent largely on the edge of the mat, Freeman started the second period in the down position and reversed Rowe with 1:46 on the clock. Rowe escaped seven seconds later to bring the score to 2-1. Rowe then scored a takedown at the 29 second mark to go into the third period with a 3-2 advantage. With Freeman on top to start the second, Rowe escaped at the 1:39 mark to bring his advantage to 4-2. Rowe then took Freeman down and rode him out for the remainder of the period to claim a 7-2 win with riding time.
157 pounds: Neil Erisman lost a 4-0 decision to No. 17 Chad Terry. After a scoreless first period, Terry chose the down position to start the second and escaped at the 1:42 mark to open the scoring. He then caught Erisman in an ill-fated shot that resulted in a Terry takedown with 27 seconds on the clock. Terry rode Erisman out for the rest of the period and rode him the entire third period to seal his 4-0 win with riding time.
165 pounds: Fifth-ranked Cowboy Jake Dieffenbach claimed a 7-3 win over Max Dean. Dieffenbach used a pair of takedowns to roar out to a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period. He extended his lead to 5-1 with a quick escape to start the second period, then took Dean down again to go up 7-1 with 34 seconds left in the second. An escape by Dean brought the score to 7-2 through two periods. Starting the third period on top, Dieffenbach instantly let Dean loose, but was unable to generate any further scoring to pick up bonus points.
174 pounds: Knowing he needed a pin in the final match to salvage a tie in the dual for his team, No. 8 Brandon Mason of OSU was a 7-0 winner over Chris Devilbiss. The key stretch of the match came when Mason took Devilbiss down with 1:18 remaining, but was unable to turn him to his back for the necessary pin.
