Four Cowboys Named To Wallace Award Watch List

LUBBOCK, Texas  Four Oklahoma State Cowboys have been named to the 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award preseason watch list, it was announced today by the College Baseball Foundation.
OSU pitchers Tyler Lyons and Andrew Oliver, outfielder Neil Medchill and infielder Tom Belza are among those listed on the “Wallace Watch.” Lyons, Oliver and Medchill will be juniors for the Cowboys this season, while Belza is entering his sophomore season.
The Wallace Award is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. The award is named after former Texas Tech star Brooks Wallace.
A second-team All-Big 12 Conference performer as a sophomore, Lyons ranked fourth nationally with 12 wins. He was 12-2 on the mound with a 3.31 ERA and tossed four complete games in 15 starts. He also racked up 92 strikeouts in 108.2 innings of work.
Oliver was named first-team All-Big 12 after going 7-2 with a 2.20 ERA and recording 96 strikeouts in 98.1 innings. His 2.20 ERA ranked third in the conference and 16th nationally.
In his first season as a Cowboy, Medchill earned first-team All-Big 12 accolades after hitting .349 with 11 home runs and 41 RBIs. He also earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team at the NCAA Stillwater Regional.
Belza had an impressive freshman campaign for the Cowboys a year ago. The Loveland, Ohio native led the Big 12 with a .386 batting average and was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American. Belza ended the season on a 14-game hitting streak and was named to the NCAA Stillwater Regional All-Tournament Team.
