Three Cowboys Win Titles At Loper Open
December 14, 2008 | Cowboy Wrestling
KEARNEY, Neb. Â A dozen Oklahoma State wrestlers competed at the Nebraska Kearney Loper Open Saturday with 141-pounder Luke Ashmore, 165-pounder Alex Meade and 174-pounder Cody Hill all emerging as champions of their respective weight classes. Other strong performers included 133-pounder Jordan Oliver (second place), 165-pounder Neil Erisman (second place behind teammate Meade) and 184-pounder Chris McNeil (fifth place).
By roaring through the 165-pound bracket at the Loper Open, Meade improved his season record to 19-2. The freshman from Camden, Del., picked up bonus points in four of his five wins Saturday, with his lone decision a 3-2 win over Erisman in a thriller in the title bout.
Ashmore's title at the Loper Open was the first of his OSU career. He dominated each of his first three opponents before winning by decision in the semifinals and knocking off Nebraska's Jon Burns by a 5-4 score in the finals.
Hill's title Saturday marked the third time in his Oklahoma State career he has won an open tournament, as he won the Nebraska-Omaha Open his redshirt year and the Central Missouri State Open last year. Though he was not dominant in his bracket, he did enough to win, claiming a 6-1 victory over Nebraska Omaha's Ross Taplin in the title bout.
After rolling through the first three open tournaments of his OSU career without a loss, Oliver had bonus points in each of his four bouts Saturday before losing a 6-5 decision to Nebraska-Omaha's Cody Garcia in the championship match. Garcia is an NCAA Division II National Champion who is ranked second in the nation in the current Division II rankings.
The Cowboys return to action when they travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif., to face Cal Poly next Tuesday, Dec. 16 before competing at the Reno Tournament of Champions Thursday, Dec. 18.
