Nine Cowboys Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

IRVING, Texas  Nine Oklahoma State Cowboys were named to the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 Conference Football Team, it was announced by the league office today.
Highlighting the list of OSU honorees is senior linebacker Seb Clements, who earned first-team Academic All-Big 12 accolades for the third time in his career, along with junior guard Andrew Lewis and freshman linebacker Jared Glover, who were among only six league players nominated with 4.00 grade point averages.
Joining Clements, Lewis and Glover on the first team were freshman defensive lineman Jamie Blatnick and senior long snapper Zach Allen. The 2008 selection marks the third time Allen has been an Academic All-Big 12 performer, and he has twice been named to the first team.
Earning second-team Academic All-Big 12 honors for the Cowboys were junior wide receiver Jeremy Broadway, sophomore wide receiver Dez Bryant, sophomore defensive lineman Shane Jarka and freshman offensive lineman Nick Martinez. Each of those four players earned academic all-conference honors for the first time in their careers.
The Big 12 named 137 student-athletes to the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 Football Team. Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and its media relations offices, the football academic all-league squad consists of 91 first-team members and 46 players on the second team.
To earn first-team honors, a student-athlete must have recorded a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second-team members are those with GPA of 3.00 to 3.19. Student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher, either cumulative or in the two previous semesters and have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
