Three Cowgirls Named Academic All-America

TOWSON, Md. Â Oklahoma State had a school-record three players named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's Soccer Team, it was announced today.
Senior Yolanda Odenyo was named to the Academic All-America second team, while fellow seniors Jessica Jarrell and Jamie Markaverich earned third-team honors. The trio led the Cowgirls to an 18-1-4 record in 2008.
OSU previously never had more than two players earn Academic/Scholar All-American honors in a single season. In 2007, Odenyo earned Scholar All-America honors from NSCAA/adidas, while Niccole Grimaldi became the first OSU soccer player to earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors.
A native of Uppsala, Sweden, Odenyo carries a 3.73 grade point average in Family Relations and Child Development. A three-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 honoree, Odenyo also earned NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-American honors in 2006 and 2007. A midfielder, Odenyo leads the Big 12 Conference with 16 goals and 37 points in 2008.
Jarrell is a nutritional sciences major who maintains a 3.78 GPA. A defender from Highland Village, Texas, she is also a three-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 performer and a three-time OSU Academic Achievement Award winner. Jarrell started every game for the Cowgirls this season and recorded three assists while anchoring a defense that recorded 10 shutouts and allowed just 18 goals.
A zoology (pre-medicine) major, Markaverich carries a 3.95 GPA and is a four-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 winner. She will graduate Summa Cum Laude in December. A product of The Woodlands, Texas, Markaverich recorded three goals and an assist from her midfielder spot in 2008.
To be eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at her current institution and be nominated by her sports information director. The All-America teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all championship sports.
