Pettigrew Named Mackey Semifinalist
November 17, 2008 | Cowboy Football
The 2008 Oklahoma State football team has been honored with the announcement of a fifth semifinalist for a national award.
Senior tight end Brandon Pettigrew has been named one of eight remaining candidates for the John Mackey Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top tight end by the Nassau County (New York) Sports Commission.
The winner of the Mackey Award will be announced Dec. 11 as part of the ESPNU Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
Pettigrew, the ranking all-Big 12 first-team tight end as selected by the league coaches, has been a major factor for the No. 11 Cowboys since returning from a mid-season injury. Over the last four games he has caught 24 passes totaling 252 yards. He has 105 career receptions in his career, becoming the first Cowboy tight end to eclipse the 100-catch mark. He is also regarded as one of the top run-blockers in the Big 12 Conference.
Pettigrew is No. 12 all-time at Oklahoma State in catches (105) and receiving yards (1,361).
Pettigrew joins four other Cowboys on national semifinalist lists, including sophomore running back Kendall Hunter (Doak Walker), junior quarterback Zac Robinson (Davey O'Brien), senior punter Matt Fodge (Ray Guy) and head coach Mike Gundy (George Munger national coach of year award).
