Orange and Black Ranking Matches
John Smith Quotes
On the Luke Silver-Quinten Fuentes match:
"What a match. It was an exciting match and it looked like Silver really wanted to get his hand raised with the last period takedown. We always talk about third period takedowns. Actually, there were two in that match. Q got one to go ahead and Silver got the escape with about 15 seconds left and picked up the final takedown to win. It was an exciting match and a good start for both those guys. We definitely can take something out of this match as we move forward into the season."
On the Jamal Parks-Luke Ashmore match:
"Parks just kind of sat around out there and didn't do a whole lot. You can't let that happen if you're wanting to win matches. You've got to hand it to Parks; he scored two takedowns in the match. The only points he scored were late in the match when he had to. We'll grow from it. It wasn't necessarily a surprise to me. People will have to grow from this ranking match and understand the little details are very important."
On Obenson Blanc and the team's performance:
"The competition wasn't real stiff, but you like to see people going out and scoring points. I thought he was very aggressive. I didn't see enough aggressiveness tonight and a lot of that could be making weight for the first time. I can tell you this weekend will have a lot more aggressiveness because we're going to be able to coach a little bit more."
On the Tyler Shinn-Chris Notte match:
"You've got to score in regulation to win matches. There weren't any regulation points scored other than escapes and we want to try to avoid that. That's not something we're looking for - for both kids. In the end, it was about
On the team:
"Most of these guys train together in the room. From the past ranking matches, I've always known when I've come out of here not so much disappointed, but I realize and understand that we've got a lot of work to do. We're no different than anyone else right now."
On how big of a role tonight's results will play in determining starters:
"We like to see guys win tournaments. It not so much competition within the room, you've got to win against other competition. These ranking matches definitely will be evaluated, but it could change on Sunday. If I have a kid that got beat tonight and then goes and wins a tournament, and, obviously, looks good doing it, then he's our starter. We've got some stock in these, but at the same time, you've got to win against outside competition."
On what he got from the match:
"Our theme this year is to be much more aggressive and get back to scoring a lot of points. It starts right there. We just need to be a lot more aggressive. We could have a very young team, but that doesn't mean anything. It's still about being aggressive and going out and focusing and putting your fear aside and wrestling the Cowboy way. That's a process and it's going be a process for this group."
