Opening Statement
“There was a lot of talk about the game last Saturday (vs. Texas). It was a very good college football game. We would have liked to have finished the game and won. I was very proud of our football team and the way they competed. We ask our players to prepare hard and practice hard, and we ask our coaches to do the same. We ask them to give us a great effort on Saturday, and they did that. We just came up a little short. We put that behind us and we go back to work today and get the players ready for the game this Saturday.”
On keeping the players focused after a big game:
“It always concerns you. We have a lot of leadership and maturity on the team. It's an interesting mix. We have a lot of young players who don't have a lot of game experience that are contributing. We also have several players who are mature and understand. I think they've done a nice job of leading the younger players. It's a long season, and you have to take it one game at a time. You can't get too high or too low. I'm confident they will come back and practice well today.”
On Kendall Hunter:
“He's in much better physical condition than he was last year. Rob Glass has done a tremendous job with him. And Keith Toston has helped us. But Hunter has been very durable, and he practices really well. I got a call this morning on the teleconference about him. There hasn't been a lot of talk about him really until a couple weeks ago. But we're glad he's on our team, and he's been very good for us. One of the best attributes he has is he never says anything. He just does what we ask him to do, and he continues to play hard. You can't get enough guys like that.”
On recruiting Hunter:
“Coach (Joe) Wickline and I pulled our best Mel Kiper out on him, and we thought he was going to be really good. We have specific recruiting areas geographically and then by position. And Wickline kept standing on the table for him. He kept reminding the staff ÂHey, there's a guy out here in East Texas. He had an injury, not a lot of people know about him, he's a great football player and his coaches, who have been around a long time, speak very highly of him as a person.' That goes a long way with our staff so I said I'll go. We went and saw him when he had a spring scrimmage, and it didn't take long after that. After about 10-12 plays we knew. I asked Wickline where he was hiding this guy.”
On responses after the Texas game:
“I got a lot of them, more so than ever. I just got one that said ÂMike, no one likes close losses. In all my years of following Cowboy football, I've never seen the Oklahoma City fan base this proud. Pass this on to the team. Great job.' We had a lot like that. If it's my mom, I kind of disregard it. But these are Oklahoma State people. We're continuing to get better and build and do things here that are going to be really special. I think the people out there are excited. I know I'm excited.”
