Countdown To The Jamboree: Looking Back
October 01, 2008 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER, Okla. - As the Cowboy Jamboree approaches Saturday, the countdown looks back at the history of the nation's oldest consecutive cross country event, including a recap of what happened at last year's Jamboree.
The Cowboy Jamboree dates back to 1937 and is held on the historic Oklahoma State cross Country Course.
The course is a 5,000-meter loop that is run twice for major championship races. One of those is the Midwest Regional Championship, which was held on the Jamboree course in 1996 and again in 2003. The Regional Championships return to the OSU Cross Country Course in 2008. The course will also be home to the Big 12 Championships in 2009.
The Cowboy Jamboree is now one of the largest non-championship cross country races in the nation, with about 6,000 athletes competing in the event each year.
Last year's Jamboree was no different than the 70 before it - a great success.
On the University Men's Team side, the highlight teams heading into the event were No. 5 Arkansas, No. 8 Oklahoma State and Division II powerhouse Abilene Christian.
The Cowboys upset the Razorbacks and took first place at the event.
Oklahoma State won by way of a tiebreaker, decided by the performances of the athletes who did not score, after both it and Abilene Christian finished with 69 points.
The Razorbacks finished in third with 73 points, while Tulsa and South Plains rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Missouri State came out on top of the University Women's Team race with 58 points, while Tulsa finished second with 75 points. South Plains College took third, while the Oklahoma State B Team and Mid-America Nazarene finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
The best individual men's performance came from South Plains's John Kosgei in the University Men's section, who finished the 8,000-meter course in 23:42.
A South Plains runner also had the best individual women's finish. Lillian Badaru, competing in the University section, ran the 5,000-meter course in 17:15.
This year's Cowboy Jamboree, the 72nd installment of the event, looks to continue the strong tradition of the annual race and be another great event.
More than 100 colleges and 270 high schools are scheduled to compete, with about 5,500 total runners ready to compete for the prestigious crown at the Jamboree.
The 2008 Cowboy Jamboree is ready for success and to help keep the nation's oldest cross country race running strong for many years to come.
