Pair of Aces
OSU boasts two of the nation's top-ranked wrestlers in 133-pounder Coleman Scott and 141-pounder Nathan Morgan. Scott has been No. 1 in each of the national rankings for the majority of the year, but Morgan climbed to No. 1 in last week's Amateur Wrestling News individual rankings for the first time. He is also the nation's No. 1 141-pounder according to W.I.N. Magazine. Morgan is No. 2 in the InterMat rankings.
The two Cowboys are a combined 32-0 since OSU's match against American at the Northeast Duals on Nov. 24, with both wrestlers going a perfect 16-0 since then.
Against ranked opponents, Scott and Morgan are a combined 6-2.
Scott, Morgan Hit The Century Mark
Seniors Coleman Scott and Nathan Morgan both hit a career milestone at the Virginia Duals when the two Cowboys reached the 100-win plateau for their respective careers. Scott became the 27th wrestler in OSU history to hit the century mark when he tech falled Drexel's William Martin, 16-0. Morgan hit the milestone when he pinned Illinois' Ryan Prater at the 4:33 mark of their match.
The Rundown on Rankings
Oklahoma State enters Sunday's dual ranked third in the nation in the USA Today/InterMat/NWCA Division I Team Rankings. Iowa State is ninth.
As for ranked individuals, OSU boasts six in its starting lineup as ranked by the coaches, led by top-ranked 133-pounder Coleman Scott and No. 2 141-pounder Nathan Morgan. 165-pounder Jake Dieffenbach is ranked fifth, with 174-pounder Brandon Mason and heavyweight Jared Rosholt both ranked seventh in their respective weight classes. 157-pounder Newly McSpadden 17th.
Iowa State's list of probable starters includes eight ranked wrestlers, led by No. 1 Jake Varner at 184 pounds. Heavyweight David Zabriskie is ranked fifth, with 157 pounder Cyler Sanderson and 165-pounder Jon Reader both ranked sixth in their respective weight classes. Nick Fanthorpe rounds out the Cyclones' group of top-10 wrestlers, as he is ranked seventh at 133 pounds. Other ranked Iowa State wrestlers are No. 17 Tyler Clark (125 pounds), No. 20 Nick Gallick (141 pounds) and No. 20 David Bertolino (197 pounds).
Prime-Time Matchups
Sunday's dual provides multiple premier bouts, as No. 1 Coleman Scott will likely face No. 7 Nick Fanthorpe at 133 pounds, No. 5 Jake Dieffenbach will likely match up with No. 6 Jon Reader at 165 pounds and No. 7 Jared Rosholt will get a crack at No. 5 David Zabriskie at heavyweight.
Scott and Fanthorpe have never faced and neither have Dieffenbach and Reader, but Zabriskie beat Rosholt three times last year, highlighted by a 3-2 win in the Big 12 championship bout. Though Zabriskie is 3-0 all time against Rosholt, he has never beaten Rosholt by more than one point, as the three scores in their head-to-head series are 4-3, 4-3 and 3-2.
Rosholt Wins Quietly
Given the success of Coleman Scott and Nathan Morgan, along with the great story of Jake Dieffenbach this year, heavyweight Jared Rosholt has gone largely unrecognized despite compiling a 22-2 overall record that includes a 13-1 dual match record and six wins over ranked opponents.
Rosholt added 20 pounds to his frame in the offseason and said he attributes a good deal of his success this year to the fact that he has added more size. As a redshirt freshman last year, Rosholt was 23-12 overall and 12-6 in dual matches. He has already surpassed his dual match win total from a year ago and will match last year's season win total with his next victory.
Parade Of Ranked Foes Continues For Dieffenbach
Already with seven wins over ranked opponents and two wins over top-five opposition to his credit, 165-pounder Jake Dieffenbach has yet another opportunity to continue to stamp himself as one of the nation's best Sunday when he faces No. 6 John Reader of Iowa State.
Entering Sunday, seven of Dieffenbach's last 10 opponents were ranked at the time of their bouts with Dieffenbach, with three ranked in the top five.
