Cowboys Tie No. 11 Missouri, 16-16

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Second-ranked Oklahoma State tied No. 11 Missouri, 16-16 Saturday at the Hearnes Center in Columbia. Both teams won five bouts and both teams registered a major decision, but the key moments of the match came when third-ranked 165-pounder Nick Marable of Missouri scored a takedown with time running out in a sudden victory period against No. 5 Jake Dieffenbach of OSU and when Missouri's Marcus Hoehn staved off a potential major decision loss to OSU's Nathan Morgan at 141 pounds and eventually stormed back to almost win the bout.
Cowboy senior Coleman Scott was a 17-4 major-decision winner over Nick Velliquette at 133 pounds, but his bonus points were countered by Max Askren's 18-8 major-decision win over Clayton Foster at 197 pounds. Heavyweight Jared Rosholt, 125-pounder Tyler Shinn and 174-pounder Brandon Mason all won by decision for the Cowboys, with 184-pounder Raymond Jordan, 149-pounder Josh Wagner and 157-pounder Michael Chandler winning decisions for the Tigers.
The Cowboys return to action at 6 p.m. Sunday when they take on No. 3 Nebraska at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City as part of the ESPNU Wrestling Invitational.

184 pounds - In the first dual of the day, No. 6 Raymond Jordan of Missouri handed Oklahoma State's Jack Jensen an 8-2 defeat. Jordan notched a takedown at the 1:36 mark of the first period to open the scoring. Jensen's escape with 52 seconds remaining sent the two wrestlers into the second period with Jordan up, 2-1. Jordan added a takedown and an escape in the second period to increase his lead to 5-1. Jensen chose down to open the third period and recorded an escape with 1:27 remaining to cut Jordan's advantage to 5-2. A late takedown just before the final horn to go with a 1:16 riding time advantage lifted Jordan to the 8-2 win.
197 pounds - OSU freshman Clayton Foster lost an 18-8 major decision to No. 9 Max Askren. Foster notched two takedowns in the bout, but Askren controlled the overall flow of the match.
Heavyweight - A third-period maneuver in which Jared Rosholt fought off a takedown bid by No. 12 Mark Ellis helped lift Rosholt to a 5-3 victory. With Rosholt leading 3-2, Ellis grabbed Rosholt's leg, but the Cowboy sophomore spun out of danger to get behind Ellis and log a takedown of his own to seal the victory and get the Cowboys on the board.
125 pounds - With just under a minute remaining in the first period, Missouri's John Olanowski went for a duck-under on Cowboy sophomore Tyler Shinn, but Shinn bearhugged Olanowski to notch a takedown and eventually a three-point nearfall to set the tone for Shinn's eventual 7-1 victory. Shinn added a second-period escape and 1:44 of riding time to roll to victory.
133 pounds - Cowboy senior Coleman Scott cruised to a 17-4 major decision victory over Missouri's Nick Velliquette. Scott did not get the chance to face familiar foe Tyler McCormick, who was injured and did not compete. Ranked No. 1 in the nation, Scott scored five takedowns to go with an escape, a three-point nearfall late in the bout and 2:47 of riding time to claim the win. Velliquette was called for two stalling points in a match that was never in doubt.
141 pounds - OSU senior Nathan Morgan was an 8-7 winner over Marcus Hoehn, whose third-period flurry fell just short. Morgan held a 7-2 advantage through two periods, but Hoehn scored a pair of takedowns and an escape in the final stanza to tighten the margin.
149 pounds - Oklahoma State coach John Smith shook things up by inserting Springfield, Mo., native Ryan Freeman into the lineup for the first time this year, and Freeman made Smith look good in the first period by notching a five-point move on No. 15 Josh Wagner. Wagner took a shot at Freeman, who caught him in a cradle and turned him to his back for a three-point nearfall. Wagner escaped then notched a takedown on Freeman with time running out in the opening stanza. Wagner chose down to start the second period and got a reversal to tie the score at five. Freeman chose down to start the final period and notched an escape to take a 6-5 lead, but Wagner shot in shortly after Freeman's escape to record another takedown and score a two-point nearfall. Wagner also added a riding time point to win, 10-6.
157 pounds - No. 12 Michael Chandler of Missouri claimed a 4-0 win over No. 15 Newly McSpadden bolstered by 2:50 of riding time. Chandler scored a first-period takedown with 57 seconds on the clock for the lone scoring of the period. McSpadden chose down to open the second and was ridden out for the entire period and was called for stalling to fall behind, 3-0. A Chandler escape plus the riding time point gave him the win.
165 pounds - In a bout pitting two of the nation's top-five wrestlers, No. 3 Nick Marable of Missouri was a 3-1 sudden victory win over No. 5 Jake Dieffenbach. The two wrestlers went scoreless through the first period before Marable was cut loose by Dieffenbach early in the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Marable's escape marked the only scoring of the second period. A quick escape by Dieffenbach in the third period tied the score at one and was the only point of the period. In overtime, Dieffenbach got off balance and Marable swept in to notch the takedown in the waning moments of the period to win, 3-1.
174 pounds - With the Cowboys trailing the dual by a 16-13 margin going into the final bout of the day, OSU's Brandon Mason won a 4-0 decision over Brock Wittmeyer to deadlock the dual at 16. After scoring a takedown in the opening stanza for the period's lone points, Mason was ridden out the entire second period. Mason tried to turn Wittmeyer in the third period but was unsuccessful, as the only third period scoring came when Wittmeyer was called for stalling underneath and Mason earned a riding time point.
