Rickie Fowler Leads Americans During First Day of Walker Cup
September 08, 2007 | Cowboy Golf
Oklahoma State freshman Rickie Fowler was one of two players for the U.S. squad to win a pair of matches on Saturday, helping the Americans to a 6-6 tie with Great Britain and Ireland at the Walker Cup Match being held at Royal Country Down Golf Club.
Fowler teamed with Billy Horschel, who also won both of his matches on the day, to win their alternate shot match against Lloyd Saltman and Rhys Davies, 4 and 3.
The youngest member of the squad, Fowler capped his day by cruising to a 5-and-4 win during his afternoon singles match against Saltman.
“This afternoon, it was a lot easier to get in a groove. Playing every shot, unlike alternate shot where you're hitting one shot here, one shot there,” Fowler said. “So I didn't hit the ball very well this afternoon, but I putted great. Like a lot of people said, this tournament's going to won on the greens or around the greens.”
Former Cowboys Trip Kuehne and Jonathan Moore are also competing in the event as Kuehne teamed with Kyle Stanley during the morning action, falling 2 and 1, while Moore and partner Webb Simpson halved their match.
The last Walker Cup was played in 2005, with the USA winning by a point at Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Ill. Prior to that, the GB&I had a run of three consecutive victories. The U.S. leads 32-7-1 in the biennial series history that was begun in 1922.
Fowler and Horschel will be paired again for tomorrow's alternate shot matches, while Kuehne and Moore will play together at the par-71, 7,181-yard layout.
In the afternoon singles matches, Fowler will take on Davies, while Kuehne will square off with Saltman and Moore will take on Nigel Edwards.
