OSU Trio Helps Americans Retain Presidents Cup

Two of the three players with Oklahoma State ties competing at The Presidents Cup won their singles matches on Sunday to help the United States defeat the International squad by a 19.5-14.5 margin at Royal Montreal Golf Club.
Charles Howell III led for 11 of the 17 holes in his match with Stuart Appleby en route to a 2 and 1 victory. The 2000 NCAA champion led for five of the first eight holes and trailed briefly after losing the 10th before reclaiming the lead for good on the 12th hole.
A member of the 2003 U.S. Presidents Cup squad as well, Howell finished with a 2-2-0 record.
Scott Verplank rallied from a 2-down deficit after nine holes to defeat Rory Sabbatini, 2 and 1. Taking part in the event for the second time in his career, Verplank trailed for seven consecutive holes before squaring the match on the 12th hole and winning Nos. 16 and 17 to close out the match.
The former Cowboy All-American finished with an impressive 4-0-0 mark.
Competing in The Presidents Cup for the first time, Hunter Mahan finished with a 2-3-0 mark after falling, 3 and 2, to K.J. Choi on Sunday. The 2003 national player of the year at OSU, Mahan won Nos. 5 and 9 and was all square before Choi won three consecutive holes to close out the match after 16 holes.
