Cowboys Open 2007 Home Slate With Florida Atlantic
September 03, 2007 | Cowboy Football
Saturday Night In Stillwater
The Oklahoma State Cowboys (0-1) will open the home portion of the 2007 football season Saturday night when the Florida Atlantic Owls (1-0) visit Boone Pickens Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:05 p.m. There will be no live television.
FAU-OSU
Florida Atlantic and Oklahoma State are meeting for the third time ever, and for the third straight season. The Owls are visiting Stillwater for the second year in a row. OSU leads the series, 2-0 after a 23-3 win in south Florida in 2005 and last year's 48-8 victory in Boone Pickens Stadium.
Sun Belt Success
Oklahoma State has not lost a game to a member of the Sun Belt Conference (current membership) since a 1978 setback against North Texas. The Cowboys are 19-1 all-time against the league. FAU is the first of two Sun Belt opponents on the 2007 Cowboy schedule. The Cowboys will visit defending champion Troy on Sept. 14 for an ESPN2 game.
2006 Rewind
In last year's victory over Florida Atlantic, OSU extended its school record with a 14th consecutive non-conference victory. The Cowboys jumped to a 27-0 halftime advantage and cruised to the victory. Dantrell Savage rushed for 97 yards on just eight carries, including a 69-yard touchdown run. Bobby Reid and Adarius Bowman teamed up on a 69-yard touchdown pass, and Chris Collins scored on a fumble return. OSU won the total offense battle, 432-215.
Coaching Matchup
Florida Atlantic is coached by Howard Schnellenberger. The former University of Oklahoma head coach is 0-3 vs. Oklahoma State, including 0-2 at FAU and 0-1 at OU. Mike Gundy is 2-0 vs. FAU.
Local Staffing
Two FAU assistant coaches have spent time in Oklahoma. Kurt Van Valkenburgh coaches FAU linebackers and special teams. He served as OU's defensive coordinator in 1995. The Owls' offensive coordinator, Gary Nord, held the same post at OU in Â95
The Program
Oklahoma State has played in four bowl games over the past five seasons (Houston, Cotton, Alamo, Independence). A fifth bowl game in six seasons would be a first for Oklahoma State. OSU's bowl winning percentage (.647) is the best in the Big 12 Conference. Oklahoma State is 11-6 in bowl play.
Home Numbers
Oklahoma State is 72-28-5 in home openers, including 11 straight wins. The home-opener winning streak is the longest in Cowboy history. The school won 10 straight Stillwater debuts from 1926 through 1935. OSU's last loss in its home debut came in 1995 when No. 2 Nebraska defeated the Cowboys in the first game of the Bob Simmons era. In its last six home openers, the Cowboys have scored an average of 38 points. During the current 11-game winning streak in home openers, OSU has held the opposition to 10 points or less six times, including shutouts of Fresno State and Texas State.
The Friendly Confines
Oklahoma State is 7-5 in Boone Pickens Stadium under head coach Mike Gundy. The Cowboys were 4-2 last season in Stillwater with the two losses coming by a combined seven points (one in overtime). During the 2006 season, the Cowboys averaged 43.5 points in their home games and scored less than 33 points just one time. Dating back to the opening of the 2002 season, OSU is 23-7 in home games, with the victims including Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Nebraska (twice) and Kansas State. Four of those wins came against members of the Associated Press Top 25.
Trying For .500
Oklahoma State is looking to improve to 1-1 on the season following last week's loss at No. 13 Georgia (35-14). The last two OSU squads to open a season 1-1 have eventually gone bowling. The Cowboys recovered from a season-opening loss at Louisiana Tech in 2002 to go 8-5 and win the Houston Bowl. In 2003, OSU opened the season with a 17-7 loss at Nebraska, but went on to make an appearance in the Cotton Bowl. OSU started 2004 and 2005 with two victories.
