Friendly Confines
Oklahoma State is opening a Big 12 season in Stillwater for just the third time in the 12 years the league has been in existence. During the first eight years of the conference, OSU never opened Big 12 play with a home game. OSU and Texas Tech did meet in Irving to start the 1996 Big 12 season on a neutral field. In 2004, OSU opened Big 12 play at home for the first time and picked up a 36-7 win over Iowa State. In 2005, the Cowboys lost a Stillwater game to Colorado in the Big 12 opener. Last season, OSU opened at Kansas State.
In Those Openers
OSU is 3-8 in Big 12 openers. The Cowboys last opened league play 1-0 back in 2004. The Cowboys picked up a 36-7 win over Iowa State. OSU and Tech have opened league play against each other just one time. That game came in 1996 with Tech picking up a 31-3 win in the first Big 12 Conference game ever for the two schools. That game was played in Texas Stadium in Irving. OSU has gone 0-4 when opening league play against a fellow South Division opponent.
Sweet September
Dating back to the 2003 season, OSU has been a tough customer in September. OSU is 14-3 during that month of the 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 seasons. The game against Texas Tech will be the first September conference game for the Cowboys since a 2001 trip to Texas A&M. OSU did play an August conference games in 1997 (a win over Iowa State) and in 2003 (a loss at Nebraska).
Series Stuff
Texas Tech leads the all-time series with Oklahoma State, 20-11-3. The first meeting between the two schools took place in 1935. The series with Tech is the most played for the Cowboys against a South Division foe, with the exception of in-state rival Oklahoma. The two teams have split the last four games. The home team has won the last five in the series. OSU has won three of the last four games between the two teams in Stillwater. Of the 34 games between the two teams, three have come on neutral fields. The Cowboys were 21-13 winners in 1943 in Oklahoma City. In 1996, Tech won the Big 12 opener for both schools in Irving, Texas. In 1988, in Tokyo, the Cowboys were 45-42 winners.
Speaking Of 1988
The 1988 Cowboy victory over Tech in Tokyo holds special significance in OSU history. While the Cowboys were in Japan, Barry Sanders was named as the 1988 Heisman Trophy winner. Sanders then promptly went out and rushed for a school-record 332 yards in the 45-42 Cowboy victory over the Red Raiders.
Recent History
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy picked up his first win against Big 12 competition on Nov. 12, 2005, when the Cowboys upset No. 13 Texas Tech, 24-17. That game was the last visit by the Red Raiders to Stillwater. In 2003, No. 23 Oklahoma State survived a 51-49 marathon against Tech.
2005 Revisited
The last time the Red Raiders visited Stillwater, they were ranked No. 13 in the country and had a record of 8-1. The Cowboys, on their way to a 4-7 season, jumped out to a 14-0 lead on the strength of Mike Hamilton's 83-yard TD run and a 17-yard touchdown pass from Bobby Reid to D'Juan Woods. OSU's lead improved to 17-0, before a wild fourth quarter saw the Red Raiders scored 14 points to knot the game at 17-17. OSU quarterback Al Peña engineered the game-winning drive that he capped with a 1-yard TD run with just 23 seconds left in the game.
Last Season In Lubbock
Oklahoma State jumped to a 17-0 first-half lead at Texas Tech, but fell behind 27-17 in the second half. The Cowboys then rallied to within 30-24 and were throwing passes from the red zone into the Tech end zone as the game ended. It was one of four OSU losses in 2006 decided on the game's final play. Dantrell Savage rushed for 120 yards and quarterback Bobby Reid rushed for 78 in the loss. Adarius Bowman had 85 receiving yards on four catches. Tech won the total offense battle, 434-385.

Texas Tech receiver Michael Crabtree leads the country with 12.67 catches per game.

The Program

Freshman Kendall Hunter ran for 125 yards and sophomore started at quarterback for the Cowboys.

With OSU's running back depth being tested, the Tyler, Texas, product ran for 125 yards on 16 carries for a 7.8-yard average. He did not have a negative rush in the game. Hunter's performance was the first 100-yard rushing game of 2007 for Oklahoma State. It was the best performance by a true freshman since 1993 when David Thompson piled up 155 rushing yards against Kansas in 1993.
Hunter's Tracks
Despite playing in just two games (from scrimmage), Hunter enters the Tech game as OSU's leading rusher on the season with 182 yards. He is averaging 7.6 yards per carry for the season. Easy to forget is that Hunter is OSU's third leading receiver with five receptions for 62 yards. He is averaging 12.4 yards per catch. Hunter is the fourth different Cowboy to rush for 100 yards under Mike Gundy. He joins Mike Hamilton, Keith Toston and Dantrell Savage in that category. Hamilton, Toston and Hunter all accomplished the feat as freshmen. Hunter has also shown some big-play skills. He scored a touchdown on a 47-yard screen pass and also has a 33-yard touchdown run (both against Florida Atlantic).
