Cowgirls Open Season With Dramatic Overtime Win
September 01, 2007 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Senior Niccole Grimaldi's goal less than two minutes into overtime gave 20th-ranked Oklahoma State a 2-1 win over New Mexico in the Cowgirls' season opener Friday night at Cowgirl Soccer Stadium.
Grimaldi's game winner came just 1:41 into the extra period and capped a late comeback by OSU that saw it tie the score in the 82nd minute.
Trailing 1-0 late in the second half, Jamie Markaverich blasted a shot off the top of the crossbar. The rebound deflected off New Mexico's Samantha Bevis and into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
After 90 minutes, the score remained tied. But it did not take long for the Cowgirls to win it as Kasey Langdon beat several defenders and delivered a pass into the box that Grimaldi sent past the goalkeeper to give OSU the 2-1 victory.
“Our girls showed a lot of heart and desire to fight back and win,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “We didn't play our best but we were still able to get the win, and that's the sign of a good team.”
OSU fell behind just over six minutes into the match when UNM's Terryn Granados sent a shot from 40-yards out that went through the hands of Cowgirl goalie Erin Stigler.
The Cowgirls had prime opportunities to score in the opening half as they outshot the visitors by a 13-5 count. But UNM goalkeeper Shannon Adragna had four saves in the half, and OSU had several other shots sailed just wide or hit the crossbar.
OSU outshot the Lobos 23-9 in the match.
The Cowgirls return to action Sunday when they battle Arkansas State at 12:30 p.m. in Jonesboro, Ark.
