Cross Country Opens Season Saturday In Tulsa

The Basics
The 2007 Oklahoma State cross country season starts this weekend when both the men's and women's teams compete Saturday at the 2006 Hurricane Festival in Tulsa, Okla.
The race will be run at Tulsa's Mohawk Park. The four-mile men's race starts at 8 a.m., with the two-mile women's race slated for 8:30 a.m.
OSU Lineups
Running for the men's team this week will be Ryan Birkholz, Brian Gosnell, Clay Mayes, Jerhoemee Murray, Peter Doroshuk and Tucker Weems.
Running for the women's team will be Clarissa Andrews, Fey Bashorun, Baiba Blumbaha, Brandi Broaddus, Brittany Brewer, Merritt Dietz, Jenna Rae Downs, LaKendra Greathouse, Jessica Haines, Kaitlin Hamilton, Jazmine Harp, Laura Hawkey, Kimberly Johnson, Deleanor Kirkpatrick, Irene Masai, Lauren McKee, Teran Mixon, Mateja Posavec, Julie Rader, Breanna Reavis, Alina Roman, Tihana Sarac, Destyn Stallings, Meghan Sullivan, Sabrena Switzer and Kalea Tam.
About The Cowboys
Led by second-year head coach Dave Smith, the Oklahoma State men's cross country team comes off a 2006 season that saw the team win the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship and place 10th at the NCAA Championships. The Cowboys are very strong challengers for the Big 12 title this season, with sophomore Daniel Watts (47th at in the 2006 NCAA Championships) and senior David Jankowski (seventh at the 2006 NCAA Midwest Regional Championships) serving as two of the squad's top returners.
About The Cowgirls
Head coach Rene Sepulveda enters his fifth year at Oklahoma State, where he has guided the Cowgirl program into the upper third of the Big 12 during the past three years. Under Sepulveda, Oklahoma State enters the 2007 season fresh off enjoying its best three-year span since joining the Big 12 as the Cowgirls finished third at the conference meet in 2004, second at the conference meet in 2005 and fourth at the conference meet in 2006.
Sophomore Tone Hjalmarsen and seniors Kim Blomkvist and Eva Tomkanova figure to lead the Cowgirl charge in 2007.
Last Year's Hurricane Invitational
The Cowgirls ran away with the 2006 Hurricane Invitational title by claiming each of the top four individual finishes in the race and nabbing five of the top seven spots. Hjalmarsen won the two-mile race with an 11:26, with Blomkvist, sophomore Leah Schroeder and senior Maria Trejo taking second, third and fourth, respectively.
The Oklahoma State men's squad finished third at last year's Hurricane Invitational and were led by graduated senior Joe Gray, who placed ninth at the four-mile event. Junior Alejandro Ruiz and Watts led all returnees with matching times of 20:58.
