OSU Football Hits The Practice Field For First Time
August 03, 2007 | Cowboy Football
The 2007 Oklahoma State football team hit the practice field for the first time in 2007 with a lengthy late afternoon/early evening session Thursday on the OSU campus.
The workout covered a range of areas from the fundamentals to team sessions. It was the first workout at OSU for the incoming class and the first fall practice for new defensive coordinator Tim Beckman.
“The defense competed well,” said head coach Mike Gundy. “I thought on the offensive side we weren't as intense as we could have been. It picked up in the middle but we can do a better job. We made too many mistakes.”
“I don't think there's any question that the defense has something to prove, but so does the offense,” the head coach said. “Last year we caught some people by surprise. That won't happen this year.”
Gundy cited first-year players running back Kendall Hunter and defensive back William Cole as catching his eye during the initial practice
“They did a nice job for young guys in their first workout,” he said. “Of course I'm not around the big guys as much.”
Junior quarterback Bobby Reid was happy to be back on the practice field.
“People were running around, the coaches were yelling,” he said, “it's football season.”

Coach Mike Gundy Post-Practice Quotes
August 2, 2007
Gundy regarding the first practice:
“It wasn't very good. Offensively we came out and made too many mistakes and dropped the ball too much. We kind of rolled over like we thought that everyone thought we were pretty good on offense. Now defense came out and competed in individual drills. But we've got to have a lot more intensity on offense. We wasted one practice and we have 28 left.”
Gundy regarding having something to prove:
“I don't think there is any question the defense has something to prove but the offense does just the same. We snuck up on people last year. It's kind of like you walk into school and someone is going to take your lunch money. They know you're coming now and you're going to have to hit them in the mouth or they're going to take your lunch money. Last year we could go around the corner and nobody knew it. I don't think we're a secret anymore offensively. Our guys need to pick it up and be more intense and understand that if they don't prepare, then those guys down in Georgia are going to be ready for us.”
Gundy regarding new players catching his eye:
“There were some young guys that did some really nice things today, but the first day is always easy. Kendall Hunter did a nice job today. William Cole does a nice job on defense. Those guys really did a nice job as incoming freshman.”
Gundy regarding Dez Bryant:
“He made some plays. It didn't take long for him to make a few catches to make us see that we didn't miss on him.”
