Rickie Fowler Named To U.S. Walker Cup Squad
August 28, 2007 | Cowboy Golf
Oklahoma State freshman Rickie Fowler became the third player with OSU ties to earn a spot on the 2007 United States Walker Cup squad it was announced today.
One of the final two selections for the team, Fowler joins former Cowboys Trip Kuehne and Jonathan Moore on the 10-man squad and is the youngest member of the team at 18 years of age.
“It has been a goal of mine since January when they had practice for the team in Tampa,” Fowler said. “I knew I had to play my way on and I have had my best year yet, so it worked out that they picked me.”
“I can't wait to get over there and get closer to these guys before they head off to play the (PGA) Tour.”
A two-time first-team AJGA All-American, Fowler is currently ranked fourth in the Golfweek men's amateur rankings after enjoying a successful run on the summer circuit.
The Murrieta, Calif. native won the Sunnehanna Amateur by one stroke with his 8-under 272 total after posting three sub-70 scores in four rounds. Fowler also won the Players Amateur in July by two shots after firing a 24-under-par 264 total that included rounds of 63 and 64.
Fowler, who won the California State High School title and was a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Amateur in 2006, closed out his prep career by winning the 2007 Southern California High School Championship.
The Cowboy trio marks the second time in school history OSU has had three players on the squad as Kuehne was joined by Kris Cox and Alan Bratton on the 1995 squad. Overall, the program has produced 20 selections for the prestigious event.
The Walker Cup Match consists of 16 singles and eight foursomes (alternate shot) matches. The USA reclaimed the Cup with a one-point victory at Chicago (Ill.) Golf Club in 2005, snapping Great Britain and Ireland's three-match winning streak. The Americans lead the overall series, 32-7-1.
This year's match is scheduled for Sept. 8-9 at Royal County Down Golf Club in Newcastle, Northern Ireland.
