Chip Shots With Hunter Mahan
August 15, 2007 | Cowboy Golf
On Monday, former Cowboy All-American Hunter Mahan was named one of two captain's picks by Jack Nicklaus for the U.S. Presidents Cup squad. The 2003 college player of the year has enjoyed a stellar summer that saw him earn his first career PGA Tour win in June at the Travelers Championship and post a top-10 finish at the British Open Championship. Mahan was in Tulsa for last week's PGA Champonship and spoke about being back in Oklahoma.
What is it like to get to come back to Oklahoma to play a major championship?
“It feels great. Obviously, we don't get many home games in golf. This felt like one a little bit with all of the fans really supporting the Cowboys. It was neat and something I will never forget. It was a very peaceful week and I had a lot of fun. Except for the heat, it was a perfect week.”
“It is special. You see all of the people wearing orange out here. I am looking forward to watching Scott (Verplank). I think so many people are going to be cheering for him and it is going to be an electric crowd and it should be exciting.”
How much do you keep up with OSU and all that is going on in Stillwater?
“It is exciting. There is nobody that loves the university more than Coach Holder, so he is going to do everything he can to help the university grow and be a university that people want to come to from anywhere. He is gong to take the athletic department to another level.”
You experienced a lot of success in your two years in Stillwater. What did you gain from your time at OSU?
“I have just tried to remember all of the things Coach Holder told me. A lot of things I kind of listened to, but I didn't. I am trying to go back and remember those things because he is so smart. I had such an amazing time there and made a lot of friends. I had a lot of great experiences that I will never forget. It was the best time of my life for sure.”
You have had a huge summer. How happy are you with the way the summer has gone?
“I am very pleased. I feel like I have learned a lot about myself and how to play well out here. I feel like I know what I need to do to play well out here. That has taken a while for me to learn. Once I figured that out, I feel like I can go to each tournament with a game plan to play well and play well consistently for a long time. It has taken me a while to figure it out, but now I think I can carry it on.”
