Cowgirl Soccer Ranked In Pair Of Preseason Polls

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Oklahoma State women's soccer team is nationally ranked in a pair of preseason polls which were released this week.
OSU is ranked No. 23 in the preseason NSCAA/adidas poll, while the Cowgirls earned the 29th spot in the Soccer Buzz preseason rankings. OSU's appearance in the rankings marks the first time in the program's history the Cowgirls have been nationally ranked entering the season.
“Being ranked in the preseason is a reflection of our accomplishments last year, and it's a nice reward,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “There are a bunch of programs fighting for respect and to be ranked by the coaches (NSCAA poll) means we're getting on more people's radar nationally.
“But while it is nice to get the recognition, we also know also preseason rankings don't mean much.
The Cowgirls are coming off a 17-3-3 season in which they finished second in the Big 12 Conference and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. OSU ended the 2006 season ranked 12th by Soccer Buzz and 17th in the NSCAA/adidas poll.
OSU returns eight starters from last season's team, including All-American and Big 12 Conference Co-Player of the Year Yolanda Odenyo and Siera Strawser and Bridget Miller, both of whom were named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team in 2006.
The Cowgirls are also ranked No. 6 in the Central Region by Soccer Buzz, and they will have a chance to improve on that ranking based on the fact that eight of the top 15 teams in the region appear on their schedule. OSU will also travel to South Bend, Ind. in mid-September, where they will face national power Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are ranked No. 2 in the preseason NSCAA/adidas poll and No. 3 by Soccer Buzz.
“We've got to go out and justify our ranking and build on it,” Carmichael said. “Our schedule presents a lot of good opportunities to do that.”
The Cowgirls, who opened preseason practice Monday, travel to Fort Worth, Texas for an exhibition game at TCU on Aug. 25. They open the season Aug. 31 when they host New Mexico.
