Three Cowboys Named To U.S. Presidents Cup Team

A trio of former Oklahoma State golfers have been named to the United States Presidents Cup Team it was announced today. Charles Howell III, Hunter Mahan and Scott Verplank will compete for the 12-player American squad that will take on the International team Sept 27-30 at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada.
Howell and Verplank were automatic qualifiers for the event after finishing in the top 10 in the points standings, while Mahan was one of two captain's picks made by American team captain Jack Nicklaus. All three players are enjoying stellar seasons that have included victories by all three and have each of the three former Cowboys among the top 15 on the PGA Tour's money list.
Howell picked up his second career victory in February with his win at the Nissan Open and also has a pair of runner-up finishes on the season, placing second at the Sony Open and the Buick Invitational in January. The Orlando, Fla. resident also finished in the top 10 on two other occasions, tying for ninth at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship and tying for sixth at the PODS Championship.
Howell played on the 2003 U.S. Presidents Cup squad, finishing with a 3-2-0 record.
Verplank is coming off a ninth-place showing this past week at the PGA Championship in Tulsa. The finish was his eighth top 10 of the season and the sixth in his last seven outings. The Edmond, Okla. resident notched his fifth career Tour victory in April at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship.
A two-time Ryder Cup selection, Verplank will be making his second Presidents Cup appearance after tallying a 2-2-1 mark in 2005.
Mahan has finished in the top 20 in seven of his last eight starts after tying for 19th at Southern Hills last weekend. During that stretch, the Plano, Texas resident strung together four consecutive top 10s, including his first career win at the Travelers Championship in June. The 2003 collegiate player of the year, Mahan tied for eighth at the AT&T National, tied for sixth at the British Open Championship and tied for fifth at the Canadian Open.
Mahan will be making his first career Presidents Cup appearance.
This year marks the seventh time the Presidents Cup has been contested with the U.S. holding a 4-1-1 advantage overall against the International squad.
