Two Cowboys Rated Among NFL's Best
July 12, 2007 | Cowboy Football
Oklahoma State was well represented in a recent ranking of the NFL's top defensive tackles by CBS SportsLine.com's Clark Judge. The Cowboys had two of the top three players at the position as current Minnesota Viking Kevin Williams was ranked No. 1 and Jamal Williams of the San Diego Chargers checked in as the third-best player at the position.
Kevin Williams was the 9th overall pick by the Vikings in the 2003 NFL Draft and has been named to the Pro Bowl twice during his first four seasons in the league.
In 2006, the Fordyce, Ark. native was tabbed a first-team All-Pro selection by the Associated Press for the second time in his career. In 2004, he led NFL defensive tackles in sacks with 11.5 and has compiled 31 sacks in 62 career games.
“In talking to GMs and personnel directors, Williams was a consensus choice. Nobody plays the position better. He's quick, solid against the run and an inside force in the pass rush. When you wonder why the Vikings are so effective against the run, you start here,” Judge assessed.
As a Cowboy, Williams started in 42 games, including the squad's 2002 Houston Bowl victory. He tallied 160 tackles and 18.5 sacks during his four-year career and earned first-team All-Big 12 honors as a senior.
A nine-year NFL veteran, Jamal Williams has been selected to the Pro Bowl the past two seasons and was named Chargers Defensive Player of the Year and Lineman of the Year in 2004.
Williams, a second-round pick in the 1998 Supplemental Draft, has recorded 270 tackles, including 217 solo stops, and 9.5 sacks during his career.
“He plugs the middle of the Chargers 3-4, and he does it effectively. He's big. He's strong. He sheds blockers, and he makes stops. For years he was the best-kept secret in San Diego. Then the league caught on. Now he has made the Pro Bowl the past two seasons,” Judge said.
A native of Washington, D.C., Williams was an All-Big 12 pick in 1997 for the Cowboys and finished his OSU career with 117 tackles and 9.5 sacks.
