OSU Duo Helps Americans Regain Palmer Cup
June 09, 2007 | Cowboy Golf
The United States rolled to an 18-6 victory over the European squad to regain the Palmer Cup on Friday at Caves Valley Golf Club. The win moved the Americans lead in the all-time series to 6-4-1.
Captained by OSU head coach Mike McGraw, the U.S. squad stormed to a 9-3 lead on Thursday and never looked back. McGraw's squad fell behind 3-1 after the morning four-ball matches before sweeping all eight singles matches during the afternoon to build their cushion.
“After the success we had yesterday afternoon, it would have been very easy to come out complacent today,” McGraw said. “This morning's matches were key. If we had been swept this morning, it would have been back to a tight ball game but we got down to business and put ourselves in a great position where we only needed a halve to win back the Palmer Cup.”
Cowboy sophomore Jonathan Moore teamed with Webb Simpson on Thursday morning, falling 1-up to Mark Haastrup and Gordon Yates. However, the Vancouver, Wash. native tallied a point for the team with his 2-and-1 victory over Gordon Yates during the afternoon.
On Friday, Moore and Simspon were paired together again and gained redemption against Haastrup and Yates, claiming a 4-and-3 win during the foursome matches.
Needing just a halve to reclaim the Cup, the Americans took six of the eight singles matches during the final session to pull away. Moore was among the victorious in the afternoon, defeating Pedro Oriol 2 and 1 to finish the event with a 3-1 mark.
