Cowboys Open Fayetteville Regional With 6-4 Win Over Creighton
June 02, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
The win snapped OSU's six-game losing streak as the third-seeded Cowboys improved to 39-19 and moved into Saturday's winner's bracket game at 6:30 p.m. where they will face top-seeded
The Cowboys opened Friday's game against second-seeded Creighton (44-15) with a huge first inning, batting around and continuing a season-long trend by rallying with two outs against Bluejays' starter Matt Lewis.
Ty Wright singled to lead off the game, a hit which also extended his hitting streak to 35 games, and after a sacrifice bunt by Keanon Simon, Tyler Mach collected an infield single. Corey Brown fouled out for the second out of the inning, bringing Rebel Ridling to the plate.
And the Cowboys' leader in two-out RBIs delivered, blasting a three-run home run to deep left field. The home run was Ridling's 12th of the season and provided his 63rd, 64th and 65th RBIs of the season.
OSU was not done as the Cowboys would add one more run to their first-inning rally. Following a hit by pitch and a walk, Ryan Flavell delivered an RBI single to make the score 4-0.
The Bluejays mounted a two-out rally of their own in the bottom of the first, striking for a pair of runs on back-to-back RBI singles by Steve Winkelmann and Chad Ogden.
OSU would get on the scoreboard again in the third when Matt Mangini followed a double by Ridling with an RBI single that gave the Cowboys a 5-2 advantage.
Again CU answered, putting up two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the Cowboys' lead to one. Only one of the Bluejays' runs in the frame was earned.
But Creighton would not score again off of Odle, who tossed OSU's first nine-inning complete game of the season. The senior right hander did not allow a run over the final six innings as he improved to 7-4 on the season.
Odle threw 138 pitches in the contest, which marked his second complete-game effort of the season and fourth of his OSU career.
The Cowboys added their final run in the eighth when Corey Brown homered to right field. The blast was Brown's team-leading 20th of the season, and he became just the second player in OSU history (along with Billy Gasparino in 1999) to have 20 homers and 20 stolen bases in the same season.
