June 02, 2007 | Cowboy Golf
Oklahoma State's men's golf team survived a three-team playoff on Friday evening to advance to the final round of the NCAA Championship being held at the Golden Horseshoe Gold Course.
The Cowboys carded a 5-over 285 team score during their third round to fall from a tie for eighth place into a three-way deadlock for 14th with Florida State and Tennessee at 11-over 851. The trio was forced to play extra holes due to the 30-team field being trimmed in half for Saturday's final round.
Consisting of each team sending one player to Nos. 1, 2, 16, 17 and 18, the playoff saw OSU play the five holes in 2-under par. OSU got to its total after senior Ryan Posey posted a par on the first hole, sophomore Trent Leon drained a six-foot birdie putt on No. 2, senior Tyler Leon parred the 16th, sophomore Jonathan Moore converted a birdie putt from two feet on No. 17 and junior Pablo Martin got up and down for par on the 18th hole.
The Seminoles grabbed the other spot with a 1-under total, while Tennessee carded an even-par total during the playoff.
Stanford maintained its hold on the overall lead with a 275 third-round score to move to 12-under 828. The Cardinal will take a two-shot lead over Coastal Carolina into tomorrow's final round. OSU will begin the day just two shots out of the top 10 and eight strokes out of sixth place in the tightly bunched field.
Trent Leon continued to pace OSU individually, firing a 1-under 69 for the second consecutive day. The Dallas, Texas native stood at 3-over through seven holes before a birdie on No. 9 fueled his comeback that included a bogey-free back nine. A birdie on the par-4 11th drew Leon back to 1-over before birdies on two of his final three holes dropped him into red figures. His 54-hole total of 210 has him among the group tied for 23rd place.
Martin stands in a tie for 57th place after carding a 1-over 71 on Friday. The Malaga, Spain native currently stands at 3-over 213.
Tyler Leon finished play tied for 74th at 215 after a 2-over 72, while Posey posted a 73 to end the day tied for 83rd place at 216.
Moore finished the day tied for 109th place at 219 after a recording a 76 during his third round.
The Cowboys will begin their final round tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. (EST) and will play with Texas and Florida State.
