Cowboys? Ninth-Inning Rally Falls Short
May 08, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas  Oklahoma State rallied for two runs and sent the go-ahead run to the plate in the top of the ninth, but it was not enough as the Cowboys lost a 4-2 decision to Texas A&M on Friday night at Olsen Field.
The loss dropped the 15th-ranked Cowboys to 29-10 overall and 8-5 in Big 12 Conference play, while TAMU improved to 32-8 and 9-6 in league play.
OSU collected half of its eight hits in a ninth inning that saw the Cowboys nearly catch the Aggies on the scoreboard.
With the Cowboys trailing 4-0 and struggling to manage any offense against A&M starter Kyle Nicholson, Tyler Mach led off the ninth with a single, a hit extended the senior's hitting streak to 17 games.
Matt Mangini followed with a triple into the right-center field gap to score pinch runner Dusty Harvard for the Cowboys' first run, and on the next play he would score on a throwing error by TAMU third baseman Blake Stouffer to make the score 4-2.
After a pinch-hit single by Kendall Horner put Cowboys on first and second with no outs, pinch hitter Donnie Webb delivered a single to right field. But Rebel Ridling was thrown at home by A&M right fielder Brodie Green to keep OSU off the scoreboard.
Kyle Thebeau came in and ended the Cowboys' comeback attempt by retiring the next two batters to earn his fourth save of the season.
Texas A&M got on the scoreboard early in the contest with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, getting three consecutive doubles with two outs to take a 2-0 lead off OSU starter Jeff Breedlove.
Blake Stouffer jump started the rally with a double down the right-field line, and a two-bagger by Kyle Colligan plated TAMU's first run. Luke Anders followed with a double to give the Aggies a two-run advantage.
A&M increased its lead in the second, getting an unearned run on a throwing error by Mach, and the Aggies scored again in the sixth.
Breedlove was the tough-luck loser as the sophomore right hander fell to 0-2 on the season despite becoming only the second Cowboy pitcher to last five innings in Big 12 play this season. He allowed three earned runs and struck out three in 5.1 innings of work.
Nicholson improved to 9-1 for the Aggies as the senior right hander racked up nine strikeouts in 8.1 innings.
Mangini and Ty Wright were each 2-for-4 for the Cowboys, with Wright extending his hitting streak to 16 games.
The two teams return to action for the middle game of the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
