Cowboys Use The Long Ball To Earn Bedlam Series Win
May 06, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
Jordy Mercer and Tyler Mach each hit three-run home runs to lift 17th-ranked Oklahoma State to a 10-2 win over Oklahoma in front of 12,107 fans Saturday night at the AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
Mercer's shot in the bottom of the second gave OSU the lead for good, and Mach's blast was part of a five-run seventh-inning to put the game away as the Cowboys improved to 33-13 overall and 12-8 in Big 12 Conference play.
Oliver Odle earned the win on the mound with a 6.2 inning effort, the longest outing by an OSU starter in Big 12 play this season, to improve to 5-4 on the season. The senior right hander scattered nine hits and did not allow a run after giving up two in the first. His five wins are tied for the team lead.
Justin Friend worked the final 2.1 innings for his team-leading seventh save of the season and second in the Bedlam series. The seven saves is tied for the third-highest in a single-season in OSU history.
Like it did in the series opener, OU (28-19, 8-12) jumped out to the lead in the top of first inning with a pair of runs off Odle. The Sooners collected three hits and got an RBI single from Aaron Baker and an RBI groundout from Jackson Williams to take a 2-0 advantage.
The lead did not last long as the Cowboys rallied for three runs in the bottom of the second.
Corey Brown doubled to lead off the frame, and two batters later, Matt Mangini walked. That set the table for Mercer, who blasted a three-run home run to left field to give OSU a 3-2 lead. The homer was Mercer's second of the series and fifth of the season.
The Cowboys doubled their lead in the third, with an RBI double by Brown making the score 4-2, and they extended that lead in the fifth, this time on an RBI double by Rebel Ridling.
OSU led 5-2 entering the seventh frame but would soon put the game out of reach.
Mangini walked to lead off the inning and later scored on a wild pitch, and an RBI single by Steve Ptak gave the Cowboys a 7-2 lead. Two batters later, Mach crushed his 11th homer of the season over the wall in left-center field to provide the game's final runs.
Mercer and Brown each finished 3-for-4 at the plate and were two of five Cowboys to collect RBIs on the night.
Ty Wright was 1-for-2 to extend his hitting streak to 23 games, which ties him for the fourth-longest hitting streak in OSU history.
The Bedlam series concludes Sunday at 4:05 p.m.
