Pablo Martin Repeats As Big 12 Player of the Year
May 03, 2007 | Cowboy Golf
For the second consecutive year, Oklahoma State junior Pablo Martin has been named the Big 12 Men's Golf Player of the Year the league office announced today.
The Malaga, Spain native picked up his first victory of the season last week at the Big 12 Championship, posting a three-shot win over teammate Ryan Posey. Martin has three top-10 finishes on the year, tying for third at the Fighting Illini Invitational and tying for seventh at the Ping/Golfweek Preview in addition to his victory at Prairie Dunes Golf Club.
Martin made history earlier this spring, becoming the first amateur to win a European PGA Tour event with his triumph at the Estoril Open de Portugal. After his victory, Martin was named the Big 12 Golfer of the Month for the fifth time in his career.
Martin becomes the second Cowboy to win back-to-back player of the year honors, joining Hunter Mahan, who was named the league's top player in 2002 and 2003. In addition, Martin's distinction marks the seventh time in the 11-year history of the Big 12 that an OSU player has come away with the honor.
Earning Big 12 Coach of the Year plaudits was OSU's Mike McGraw. In his second year at the helm of the Cowboy program, McGraw directed the program to its league-best fifth conference title last week and led OSU to the team title at the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship last fall.
Joining Martin on the all-conference squad were senior Tyler Leon and sophomore Jonathan Moore.
Leon, a native of Dallas, Texas, collected all-league honors for the second time in his career and the first time since his sophomore season. In nine events this year, Leon has finished in the top 20 on four occasions, including a tie for 10th place at the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational. His best finish of the year came at the conference tournament where he tied for ninth place.
The 2006 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, Moore was selected to the squad for the second consecutive season after posting three top-20 finishes on the year, including a victory at the Hawaii-Hilo Intercollegiate. The Vancouver, Wash., native's fourth career victory came in record-setting fashion as he tied the school marks for low 18-hole score (62) and low 54-hole total (195).
