Six Cowboys Named All-Big 12 Conference
May 22, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
OKLAHOMA CITY Â Oklahoma State had six players named to the 2007 All-Big 12 Conference baseball team, it was announced by the league Tuesday.
The All-Big 12 teams were selected by the league coaches, and OSU's six all-conference honorees were the second most in the league. Texas, the conference's regular season champion, had the most all-conference selections with seven.
The Cowboys placed three players  second baseman Tyler Mach and outfielders Corey Brown and Ty Wright  on the All-Big 12 first team. The three first-team selections were the most for OSU since the Cowboys had four in 2003.
Making the second team for OSU were first baseman Rebel Ridling and third baseman Matt Mangini, while Jordy Mercer, who plays shortstop and pitches for the Cowboys, was also a second-team choice as a utility player.
OSU also had three players named honorable mention all-conference. Relief pitcher Justin Friend and outfielder Keanon Simon were honorable mention picks, and Mercer was honorable mention all-conference at shortstop.
Mach, last year's Big 12 Conference Co-Player and Newcomer of the Year, was named All-Big 12 for the second-straight year. The senior is batting .408 with 15 home runs this season and leads the conference with 91 hits and 73 RBIs.
Brown also made the first team for the second time in his career. The junior right fielder garnered first-team honors as a freshman in 2005 before earning second-team status a year ago. Brown ranks in the top three in the Big 12 in eight offensive categories and is hitting .355 with 19 homers, 64 RBIs and 20 stolen bases this season.
A two-time honorable mention All-Big 12 performer, Wright made the first team as a senior on the strength of a league-leading .413 batting average and a 31-game hitting streak.
After missing 22 games as sophomore due to an injury, a healthy Ridling has thrived this season. He's started every game at first base for the Cowboys and is hitting .336 with 11 homers and 62 RBIs.
Mangini transferred to OSU from North Carolina State and earned second-team All-Big 12 honors after hitting .340 with nine home runs and 46 RBIs.
A first-team All-Big 12 pick as a utility player as a freshman in 2006, Mercer again proved valuable in a variety of ways for the Cowboys in '07. Despite missing the first half of the season to recover from knee surgery, Mercer has played in 31 games this season and is hitting .300 with five homers and 21 RBIs. In eight relief appearances on the mound, he is 2-0 with two saves and a 2.89 ERA.
