May 13, 2007 | Cowboy Golf
Oklahoma State's men's golf squad carded a 262 team score during the final round of The Maxwell on Sunday at Dornick Hills Country Club, giving the Cowboys their sixth consecutive victory at the event.
OSU entered the day with a five-shot lead over the field and finished with a 54-hole total of 780. The Cowboys' tally was good for a seven-stroke cushion over second-place Tulsa.
The win was OSU's third of the 2006-07 season and second consecutive after winning the Big 12 Championship last month at Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
Senior Ryan Posey matched his career-best outing with his second consecutive runner-up finish. The Dallas, Texas native began the final day five shots out of the lead before carding a 5-under 65 during his final round to get into a playoff with Tulsa's Nick Geyger after the duo finished at 15-under 195.
After finding the right rough off the tee on the first playoff hole, Posey stuck a sand wedge within a foot of the hole, but Geyger holed his shot from the fairway for an eagle to take home medalist honors.
Junior Pablo Martin moved up one spot into fourth place after his third consecutive round of 67 gave him a 201 total.
Sophomore Jonathan Moore, the 2006 Maxwell individual champion, and senior Tyler Leon also found their way into the top 10, tying for seventh place at 6-under 204. Moore carded a 68 during his final round, while Leon posted his third consecutive sub-70 round with a 69
Sophomore Trent Leon rounded out the starting five with a round of 72 to finish tied for 25th place at 212.
A pair of Cowboys competed individually as redshirt freshmen Trent Whitekiller and true freshman Chris Ward also took part in the event. Whitekiller carded a 73 during his final round to finish at 210, while Ward posted his low round of the tournament with a 70 to move into a tie for 41st place at 218.
OSU will return to action on May 17 when it begins play at the NCAA Central Regional in Sugar Grove, Ill. where the Cowboys will be the No. 2 seed at Rich Harvest Farms.
